Joanna Crist falls short of state finals with finish in CIF-SCGA championship

Sophomore Joanna Crist of La Quinta High School shot a 6-over 80 on Thursday in the CIF-SCGA championship, ending her girls golf season one step short of the CIF state championship.

Crist tied for 59th in the 121-player event featuring golfers from the CIF’s Southern, Central, Los Angeles and San Diego sections. Only the top three teams of the 10 playing and the top nine individual golfers not on advancing teams move on to the state tournament next week at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

Crist’s round on the par-74 North Course at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills included four bogeys and one double bogey. The cut for the state tournament came at 2-under 72.

Donina Zhou of Santa Margarita High School won the CIF-SCGA title with a 5-under 69, winning a one-hole playoff over Kaila Elsayegh of Marlborough High School of Los Angeles.

Santa Margarita finished first in the 10-team event at 6-under 364. Walnut (376) and Torrey Pines of San Diego (380) will also advance to the CIF state event.
