Trey Lance suffers season-ending ankle injury vs. Seahawks; Jimmy Garoppolo leads 49ers to win

The San Francisco 49ers were forced to turn back to Jimmy Garoppolo after starting quarterback Trey Lance was carted off with an ankle injury in the first quarter of their Week 2 matchup with the Seattle Seahawks.

Following the contest, head coach Kyle Shanahan announced Lance broke his ankle and will undergo season-ending surgery.

Lance looked to have hurt his ankle on a designed run on second-and-8 at the Seahawks' 21-yard line. He was immediately given an air cast and carted off the field.

It's a huge blow to the 49ers, who were banking on Lance to elevate their offense after Garoppolo led San Francisco to the NFC title game in 2021. The 49ers tapped Lance as their starter over Garoppolo this offseason but weren't able to trade their veteran all summer. The 49ers ended up restructuring Garoppolo's contract to keep him on the team as Lance's backup and insurance policy in case of, well, a situation like this.

Garoppolo performed well in relief of Lance, throwing for one touchdown and running in another during a 27-7 win over the Seahawks.
