The most compelling player in Thursday night’s Jacksonville Jaguars-Tennessee Titans game might not be with his team by Week 4.
Jaguars cornerback Jalen Ramsey asked for a trade after last Sunday’s game. The Jaguars didn’t move him before Thursday and he was active for Jacksonville on Thursday night, a game that can be live-streamed on the Yahoo Sports app.
Just because he was in uniform for the Jaguars on Thursday doesn’t mean he’s backing off his trade request.
Jalen Ramsey says ‘disrespectful things’ said to him
Ramsey talked to NFL Network’s Nate Burleson on a podcast and explained why and when he asked for a trade.
Ramsey told Burleson (h/t to CBS Sports’ Sean Wagner-McGough) it wasn’t necessarily the well-publicized blowup with coach Doug Marrone on the sideline that led to the trade request. Regarding that argument, he said he “kinda moved past it” by the time the game was done.
“I didn’t think much of that in particular, because that happens from time to time,” Ramsey said.
What turned the tide, he told Burleson, was unspecified “disrespectful things” that were said. It seemed that happened after the game.
“Some disrespectful things were said on their end that made me definitely walk out and call my agent as soon as I walked out,” Ramsey said. “I said, ‘It’s time. My time is up here in Jacksonville.’”
Ramsey said he was calm and at peace when he asked for the trade. He didn’t do it it out of anger, he said.
“I still stand by that decision to ask for a trade,” Ramsey told Burleson.
Ramsey said he has issues with the Jaguars front office
Ramsey said the decision was building over time and had nothing to do with his teammates, who he said he loves. He also said he loves Jacksonville. He said it was “more with the front office and the organization.”
Ramsey didn’t say what his issue was with the front office. This past offseason, VP of football operations Tom Coughlin was critical of Ramsey not showing up for voluntary OTAs. Ramsey and his agent weren’t happy with that at the time, though Ramsey didn’t say if that had anything to do with his trade request.
Whatever led to the issues, Ramsey wants out. He hasn’t changed his mind on that, and it doesn’t sound like he will. After Thursday night, the Jaguars will have a few extra days to figure out their next move.
