Jackson State basketball dominates SWAC men's, women's annual awards

Jackson State basketball's Ken Evans Jr. was selected the Player of the Year and Jordan O’Neal was named Defensive Player of the Year by the Southwestern Athletic Conference on Tuesday.

Jackson State's Tomekia Reed was selected as SWAC women’s coach of the year for the third consecutive season, and the Tigers' Angel Jackson was selected Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season. Miya Crump and Ti’lan Boler made first team All-SWAC, and Jackson was selected to the second team.

Evans was the SWAC's leading scorer with 18.9 points per game and scored his 1,000th career point during the season. O’Neal led the SWAC in blocked shots (1.5) while averaging 6.1 rebounds per game.

Reed led the Tigers to 23-6 record, including 18-0 in SWAC games, during the 2023-24 regular season. It is the fourth coach of the year award overall for Reed, who has a 95-10 record in SWAC games during her first six seasons.

Jackson averaged 10.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.7 blocked shots per game while leading the SWAC's top scoring defense (57.3 points per game).

Crump averaged 11.6 points per game and Boler followed closely at 11.5 points per game.

The Jackson State women are the No.1 seed and meet No. 8 seed Prairie View A&M in the quarterfinals of the Starry SWAC Basketball Tournament on Wednesday (5:30 p.m., ESPN+) at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Alabama.

The Jackson State men's team is the No. 6 seed and faces No. 3 seed Texas Southern Jaguars at 2 p.m. Thursday at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. The game will be streamed on ESPN +.
