Ja Morant show continues with slicing game-winner in traffic vs. Hornets
Ja Morant is putting on a show during his rookie season, more than living up to the hype that made him the No. 2 pick in the draft.
The Hornets got a potent taste of the talented Memphis Grizzlies point guard when he sliced through a crowd of Charlotte defenders in the lane on Wednesday for an acrobatic game-winning layup in a 119-117 victory.
The game-winner capped a big night for Morant, who finished with 23 points and 11 assists while hitting 10-of-15 field goal attempts.
No regrets for Grizzlies
The Grizzlies confidently jettisoned veteran point guard Mike Conley to the Utah Jazz in the offseason with the intent on building around the phenom out of Murray State. He’s proven a wise investment in the early part of the NBA season, averaging 17.8 points, 5.2 assists and 3.6 rebounds while shooting 43.8 percent from 3-point range and 46.2 percent from the field.
And Wednesday wasn’t his first foray into late-game heroics.
Nets got an early taste of Morant heroics
The Brooklyn Nets got a good look at clutch Ja in October when he sliced through their defense in similar fashion to tie the game in the final seconds of regulation. His block of Kyrie Irving to end regulation forced overtime, where he delivered the assist on a game-winning Jae Crowder 3-point buzzer beater.
He racked up 30 points, nine assists and four rebounds in that game which amounted to his welcome-to-the-NBA moment.
For a player billed as the undercard in June’s draft, Morant is looking more and more like the main event.
