IU basketball's Race Thompson to play for New York Knicks in NBA Summer League

Former IU basketball player Race Thompson has signed a deal with the New York Knicks to play in the NBA Summer League, it was announced Sunday.

It's a deserving chance for Thompson, a player who endured a lot in his college career. Thompson began his IU career playing for Archie Miller but ultimately returned to the Hoosiers following the hiring of Mike Woodson. After dealing with various injuries early in his career, Thompson developed into a key contributor for the Hoosiers. Last season, though, was tumultuous as he battled a knee injury and his general production dropped from the previous campaign. Still, his time as a Hoosier should be met with appreciation for all that he gave. Appearing in game action in five seasons at IU, Thompson tallied nearly 1,000 points and more than 700 rebounds during his career with the Hoosiers.

In taking this step, Thompson adds to the list of players from IU's 2022-23 roster to embark on their professional careers. Jalen Hood-Schifino was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 17th overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft. Trayce Jackson-Davis was taken by the Washington Wizards with the 57th overall pick, but his draft rights were soon after traded to Golden State, meaning that he is now a member of the Warriors organization.

What's also notable is that Mike Woodson has been coaching at IU long enough now for things to start to come full circle. Thompson has already been coached by someone with a meaningful history in the Knicks’ organization before even starting his professional career for them.
