Class 4A: No. 7 Ames 9, No. 2 Iowa City High 7

The Little Cyclones took down their biggest rival in a Little Cy-Hawk matchup with extremely high stakes.

Ames fell behind early but hung up two runs in the fourth and fifth innings, then hung five in the seventh to overpower City and seemingly put the game out of reach. But the Little Hawks battled back, scoring five runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning, three courtesy of a Max Waldschmidt double that cleared the bases, but it wasn't enough.

Aidan Nigh had a huge night for Ames, going 2-for-3 with a home run that sparked his team's big five-run seventh inning. Carter Geffre dominated on the hill, going six and a third inning, allowing just six hits while striking out 13.

They'll take on No. 6 Cedar Falls in the state semifinals on Thursday night in Iowa City. First pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Class 2A: No. 2 Underwood 7, No. 7 Williamsburg 2

The Eagles are on the way to the state semifinals after a big win over Williamsburg. They scored three runs in the opening frame and four runs in the third to take an early 7-1 lead.

Garrett Luett went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI. He also tossed five innings, allowed one run on five hits and struck out eight batters.

Underwood will take on No. 3 Cascade on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Carroll.

Class 4A: No. 6 Cedar Falls 11, No. 3 Southeast Polk 1 (six innings)

With nine runs scored through the first three innings, it was clear that the Tigers were locked in against the Rams. Catcher Maddox Strassburg was a catalyst for that after going 2-4 from the plate with three RBIs.

With this win, they will face either City High or Ames in Wednesday night's 7:30 p.m. semifinals game.

Class 2A: No. 3 Cascade 7, No. 6 Woodward Granger 6

Jack Menster put on a show for the Cougars to clinch the team's spot in the state quarterfinals. He went 3-for-3 with four RBIs and drew a walk. Cade Rausch tossed all seven innings and allowed seven hits while racking up nine strikeouts.

Cascade will take on either No. 2 Underwood or No. 7 Williamsburg on Thursday afternoon in Carroll.

Class 2A: No. 4 West Lyon 6, No. 5 Van Buren 5

West Lyon moves on to the state semifinals where they'll take on top-seed Berkman Catholic on Thursday night in Carroll.

Class 4A: No. 4 Dowling Catholic 4, No. 5 Dallas Center-Grimes 3

The Maroons won an absolute nailbiter after shutting down the surging Mustangs in the seventh inning with two runners on base.

Pitcher George Nahas got his third save of the season after striking out the final two batters of the game.

The Maroons will take on the top-seeded Johnston Dragons on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. in the state semifinals.

Class 2A: No. 1 Beckman Catholic 5, No. 8 Pella Christian 4

Pella Christian put up a fight, forcing the Trailblazers to score in the final inning to extend the game to the eighth frame. Beckman scored on a throwing error in extras to earn a spot in the state semifinals.

Nate Offerman tossed all eight frames for the Trailblazers, allowing three earned runs and striking out seven batters in the process.

They'll take on either West Lyon or Van Buren on Thursday night in the semifinals.

Class 4A: No. 1 Johnston 9, No. 8 Iowa City, Liberty 3

The Dragons keep their hopes of repeating as Class 4A champions alive with their convincing win over the Lightning.

Sam Hesselman and Will Nuss did a lot of damage in the middle of the lineup, getting six of the team's nine hits.

The Lightning finish their season with a 23-18 record.
