Inland Lakes baseball locked in at JoBurg; Onaway, Mackinaw City also in action

LEWISTON – Two solid pitching and hitting displays lifted the Inland Lakes baseball team, which swept Johannesburg-Lewiston with 14-1 and 14-2 victories in a doubleheader on Friday.

Connor Wallace earned the win on the mound for the Bulldogs in game one, striking out 14, allowing two hits and walking one in six innings pitched.

At the plate, Wyatt Hanel doubled, knocked in two runs and scored twice, while Cash DePauw had a hit, an RBI and a run scored, Ty Kolly recorded a hit, an RBI and two runs scored, and Payton Teuthorn added a hit.

Aidan Fenstermaker was the star in the nightcap, finishing with three hits, including a triple, knocking in four runs and scoring three times. Wallace, who doubled, tallied two hits, an RBI and three runs scored, Kolly had a hit, an RBI and two runs scored, Jake Willey registered a hit and two runs scored, DePauw doubled and knocked in a run, and Collin Maves added a hit.

DePauw was the winning pitcher, striking out 10 in five no-hit innings.

Inland Lakes (8-0, 4-0 Ski Valley Conference) heads to Forest Area on Tuesday, April 23.

Szymoniak pitches another gem, Cardinals pick up win

CENTRAL LAKE – Just a few days ago, Onaway senior Dylan Szymoniak struck out 16 batters at Bellaire.

Szymoniak was at it again on Friday, delivering another big-time pitching display and helping fuel the Cardinals to a 6-1 victory in game one of a doubleheader at Central Lake.

This time, Szymoniak struck out 15, allowed one hit and walked one in six strong innings for the win.

Jackson Chaskey led Onaway’s offense with two hits, including a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Szymoniak had two hits and an RBI, Luke Lovelace doubled, knocked in a run and scored a run, Justin Kramer-St. Germain doubled and scored two runs, and Anthony Santiago added a hit and scored a run.

In the nightcap, Onaway suffered a 4-1 loss. Despite taking the loss on the mound, Austin Veal struck out 14 and walked two in five no-hit innings. Chaskey (RBI), Santiago (run) and Lovelace each recorded a hit.

Onaway hosts Mancelona in Ski Valley action on Monday, April 29.

I-L softball struggles against high-powered JoBurg

LEWISTON – The Inland Lakes softball team couldn't keep up with host Johannesburg-Lewiston on Friday, losing 5-1 and 13-3 contests in a Ski Valley doubleheader.

In game one, Adyson Fenstermaker doubled to lead the Bulldogs (3-5, 2-2 Ski Valley), while Eva Carper and Brooklyn LaBrecque each singled. Maggie Grant took the loss on the mound, striking out four, allowing four hits and walking two.

Grant and LaBrecque tallied two hits apiece for the Bulldogs in game two. Erica Taglauer and Fenstermaker each singled. Lexi Kovtun was the losing pitcher, striking out two, scattering eight hits and walking six.

“The girls played the best they could,” Inland Lakes coach Krissi Thompson said. “The weather was absolutely freezing, cold and windy. Not your typical weather.”

Mackinaw City softball bounces back, splits with Brimley

MACKINAW CITY – The Mackinaw City softball team fought back from a lopsided game one loss and earned a 20-5 game two victory to seal a split in a doubleheader against Brimley on Friday.

Jersey Beauchamp led the Comets in the nightcap with a double, two singles, three RBIs and four runs scored, while Emily Kruczynski had two hits, an RBI and two runs scored. Adding a hit apiece were Kenzlie Currie (double, two RBI), Julia Short (three runs) and Liz Kruczynski (two runs). Others contributing were Gracie Beauchamp (RBI, run), Keilan Thompson (RBI, run), Chloe Richards (RBI, run) and Jillian Poumade (two runs).

Jersey Beauchamp was the winning pitcher, striking out one and allowing six hits.

In game one, Gracie Beauchamp doubled and scored two runs, Emily Kruczynski had two hits and an RBI, and Jersey Beauchamp added two hits and two runs scored. Groenewoud took the loss on the mound, striking out one and allowing 12 hits in five innings.

Mackinaw City hosts Wolverine on Monday.

Comets also rebound, earn split with Brimley

MACKINAW CITY – Like Mackinaw City softball, the Comet baseball team recovered from a game one loss and came back with a game two victory to pick up a split against Brimley on Friday.

In a 4-2 Mackinaw City win in the nightcap, Braylon Currie was the winning pitcher, striking out three and allowing five hits in four innings. Sabastian Pierce earned the save, striking out two.

MACKINAW CITY BASEBALL: Senior leaders, clean baseball pivotal for Mackinaw City in NLC championship pursuit

Currie’s two hits and two runs scored lifted Mackinaw City’s offense, which received a hit apiece from Ben Strittmatter (RBI), Lucas Bergstrom (run), Trystan Swanson and Wesley House. Tanyon Pierce scored a run.

Nick Vieau finished with two hits and an RBI for the Comets in a 4-2 loss in the opener. Swanson and Currie each had a hit and scored a run, and Tanyon Pierce recorded one hit.

Sabastian Pierce took the loss on the mound, striking out eight and scattering seven hits in five innings.

Mackinaw City hosts Harbor Light on Monday, May 2.

Offense sparks Onaway softball in sweep at Central Lake

CENTRAL LAKE – The Onaway softball team scored 47 runs over two games to sweep Central Lake with 26-0 and 21-15 victories on Friday.

Ema DeMaestri’s double, single, five RBIs and two runs scored led the Cardinals (4-4) in game one. Marley Szymoniak had one hit, four RBIs and scored three runs, Sadie Decker recorded a hit, two RBIs and three runs, and Kailyn George added a hit and scored three times. Other contributors included Natalie Hyde (two RBIs, three runs), Lesley Lalonde (three RBIs, two runs), Carley Karsten (RBI, three runs) and Lilly Parr (RBI, two runs).

Charlotte Box was the winning pitcher, striking out four.

George’s two hits, three RBIs and two runs scored led for Onaway in the nightcap, while DeMaestri and tallied two hits, two RBIs two runs scored, Szymoniak had a hit, three RBIs and three runs scored, Layla Box registered a hit, two RBIs and three runs scored, and Karsten recorded a hit, an RBI and one run scored. Parr and Decker each had an RBI and scored twice.

Layla Box (three strikeouts) and Charlotte (two strikeouts) both pitched for Onaway. Lalonde started.

IL track teams compete at Rathbun Invitational

CADILLAC – The Inland Lakes track and field teams were present at the Rathbun Invitational in Cadillac on Friday.

Mary Myshock finished second in the 100 (19.33) to lead the I-L girls, who saw the 4X800 relay team of Mackenzie Biesel, Maggie Newman, Addison Byrne and Elizabeth Furman place second with a 12:13 time. Josie Cooper earned third in the 100 (19.80). Fourth places went to Kaylee Taglauer in the 100 (14.25), Furman in the 3200 (13:15), Chloe Robinson in the shot put (29-2), and Frankie Bunker in the pole vault (7-0). Earning fifth were Taglauer in the 400 (1:09) and Robinson in the discus (75-7 1/2).

For the I-L boys, Austin Friske took third in the pole vault and Jake Feagan was third in the long jump (16-7 1/4), while Sam Schoonmaker recorded fourth in the discus (107-6). Picking up fifth places were Dylan Zinke in the 100 (12.16) and Cam Kettel in the 300 hurdles (55.97).

Inland Lakes hosts the Bulldog Invitational on Thursday, April 25.
