Indiana hires Mike Woodson as head coach
Indiana named New York Knicks assistant coach Mike Woodson as their new head coach on Sunday.
Woodson, 63, is an Indianapolis native who was a star player for the Hoosiers under coach Bob Knight from 1976-80.
"Welcome home, Coach Woodson," Indiana posted on Twitter.
The school did not release details of the agreement, but ESPN reported Woodson was signing a six-year deal.
Woodson's head coaching experience includes parts of three seasons with the Knicks (2012-14) and six seasons with the Atlanta Hawks (2004-10). He posted an overall record of 315-365 with five playoff appearances. He joined Tom Thibodeau's Knicks staff in September.
This is Woodson's first collegiate coaching position.
He replaces Archie Miller in Bloomington. Indiana fired Miller on March 15 after a 12-15 season. He was 67-58 in four seasons with the Hoosiers, including a 33-44 record in the Big Ten.
Indiana missed the NCAA Tournament for the fifth consecutive season this year.
Woodson averaged 19.8 points and 5.6 rebounds in 104 games with the Hoosiers.
Drafted in the first round (12th overall) by New York in 1980, he averaged 14.0 points and 2.3 rebounds in 786 NBA games with the Knicks, New Jersey Nets, Kansas City/Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers, Houston Rockets and Cleveland Cavaliers.
