An idea for the Development of Titans wide receiver Justin Hunter

Here is an idea for the development of Titans wide receiver Justin Hunter.

The Titans announced today that Kendall Wright will be out two weeks due to fluid showing up in the MRI of his hamstring. He seemed to lock up the starting slot wide receiver position with some stellar play the first few days of camp.

Tajae Sharpe was initially to be a slot wide receiver, as was Tre McBride. Sharpe was switched outside in the spring and has done well ever since. McBride did well outside last week.

Jim Wyatt quoted Mularkey saying this:

“Spending extra time, that’s doing things when nobody is watching,” Mularkey said when asked what Green-Beckham needs to do to improve. “That’s in the classroom. I think it’s just putting the work in without being directed by anybody. Doing it yourself.

“I would do it more (than he’s doing),” Mularkey said. “I mean he does do it. I would do it more. He does do it. I’d do it more.”

Let’s assume Dorial Green-Beckham was supposed to be performing better and starting outside. Maybe if not for his regression or lack of development, McBride and Sharpe would be playing in the slot.

Also keep in mind Mularkey has said he wants the wide receivers to know each position. Rishard Matthews played the slot some recently and Andre Johnson was reported to his first day.

How about they bump Justin Hunter to the first team outside wide receiver spot? Tell him he has a week to show he’s “arrived” or he’s “walkin'” and see what happens?

At this point, we can go back to the first day of OTAs and find some mention of Hunter not being consistent. This has carried on for months(arguably years) and has been the same repetitive quotes and themes to articles about Hunter. Why would three more weeks of practice with the third string change that? What is gained by waiting til cut down day on August 30th?

The benefit in doing this is obviously him finally reaching his potential and being a successful developmental project. The benefit to him NOT making the team is time that they don’t have.

They have 11 Wide Receivers. Are the 10th and 11th guys really necessary for drills? Are they really getting enough time to evaluate them?

The key players can work in the slot and get comfy there. DGB can take this time to put the work in, as Mularkey was quoted as saying. There’s still the second and third team outside spot behind Hunter in this scenario- maybe get Sharpe some extra reps with Cassel in case Mariota gets hurt?

The notion “if Hunter is cut, he might do well elsewhere and that would sting” will be there next week or in three weeks. He’s a talented person. Titans fans have always thought “one day” with him, so that will not go away. There’s still days I see Jared Cook or Kenny Britt do well and think they finally hit their massive potential. Hunter might wind up like them or he might put it all together.

I don’t really see the benefit in prolonging this decision three more weeks.
