HPU ROUNDUP: Bevis, Welsh earn weekly conference accolades

Mar. 5—CHARLOTTE — High Point University's Lauren Bevis has been selected for this week's Big South Conference women's basketball honors.

Bevis, a graduate guard, was chosen alongside Charleston Southern's Kennedi Jackson for the Co-Players of the Week. Radford's Joi Williams was also Freshman of the Week.

Bevis averaged 25.5 points while shooting 58% from the field and 50% from 3-point range to help extend High Point's winning streak to 10 games. She connected on five 3-pointers in each game while adding 2.5 rebounds, 1.0 assists and 1.0 blocks per game.

Bevis opened with 23 points on 7-of-13 shooting in an overtime win Wednesday at Winthrop. Eighteen of those points came in the second half and overtime. Bevis followed with a 28-point outburst Saturday to lead the Panthers to a 15-point comeback victory over Longwood to cap off the regular season.

Of those 28 points, 20 came in the second half with 16 of them in the fourth quarter alone. She also combined to go a perfect 11 of 11 from the free throw line in two games.

WELSH EARNS CONFERENCE AWARD

CHARLOTTE — High Point University's Ava Welsh has chosen for this week's Big South Conference women's lacrosse awards.

Welsh, a freshman goalie, earned the Defensive Player of the Week, alongside Mercer's Gabby DiVirgilio as the Offensive Player of the Week and Mercer's Ansley Waters as the Freshman of the Week.

Welsh posted 12 saves in 30 minutes of action in goal to lead High Point to a 17-14 victory Sunday over San Diego State. The 12 saves were a career-high as she finished with a .600 save percentage and two ground balls.
