Abilgail Rios wins El Paso Times Jarritos athlete of week

Abigail Rios of the San Elizario softball softball team is this week's El Paso Times' Jarritos Athlete of the Week.

In Class 4A bi-district playoff win, she had seven strikeouts in the circle went 2 for 2 at the plate with an RBI and triple.

Rios earned 43.93 of the votes, edging Mia Tellez of the Montwood softball team, who had 41.96 percent of the vote.

The El Paso Times will be honoring high school athletes this year on a weekly basis that you, the readers, help determine. We will be taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Jarritos High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close at 2 p.m. Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.

Nominations are due by 5 p.m. Monday and can be submitted through email at fchavez@elpasotimes.com or by contacting Felix Chavez through social media on X (formerly Twitter).

Here are this week's nominees:

  • Steven Serna, Eastwood baseball. Against Franklin, struck out seven, allowed one hit in win against Franklin.

  • Abigail Rios, San Elizario softball. In Class 4A bi-district playoff win, she had seven strikeouts in the circle went 2 for 2 at the plate with an RBI and triple.

  • Mia Tellez, Montwood softball. She hit a clutch home run against Odessa Permian on Saturday to help clinch a Class 6A bi-district title.

  • Miranda Guillen, Eastwood softball. Was the winning pitcher and hit home run in seeding game win vs. Soocorro, then had two strong pitching performances in Class 6A bi-district playoff win against Midland Legacy.

  • Darren Nava, Del Valle. Won the District 2-5A girls individual tennis title.

  • Jaquelin Holguin, Hanks tennis. Won the District 2-5A girls individual tennis title.

  • Ileana Maldonado, Clint tennis. She won the District 2-4A girls individual tennis title.

  • Dominick Banderas, San Elizario tennis. He won the District 2-4A boys individual tennis title.
