High School Roundup: Adrian boys basketball tops Milford at Little Caesars Arena

The week of Dec. 11-16 got started in a big way with the Adrian boys basketball team beating Milford, 62-46, at Little Caesars Arena.

It was the second win for a Lenawee County boys basketball team at the LCA with Onsted winning on the first day of the regular season.

Here's a look at the rest of the week:

MONDAY

Boys Basketball

Adrian 62, Milford 46

DETROIT — The Maples started strong and finished strong, improving to 4-1 with a non-conference win against the Mavericks.

Adrian led 19-5 after the first before Milford clawed back into the game, trailing 30-23 at the half and 41-38 going into the fourth.

Jaxson Francis got the Maples going to start the fourth with a 3-pointer then created a turnover which Sean Parker turned into a 3-pointer of his own to start an 8-1 run for Adrian in the fourth as it pulled away.

Stevie Elam, who earned Lenawee County Player of the Week, led the way with 24 points, eight rebounds, four assists, a steal and a block. Parker finished with 17 points.

Girls Basketball

Morenci 48, Reading 41 

MORENCI — Six Bulldogs scored at least four points as Morenci knocked off Big 8 Conference’s Reading.

Emersyn Bachelder led the Bulldogs with 12 points, while Leah Rorick finished with 10. Both girls hit two 3-pointers. Alyssa Gibbs and Addyson Valentine scored eight points apiece.

Addison 42, Manchester 35 

ADDISON — Taylor Jezierski scored all 17 of her points in the second half as the Panthers beat Manchester in a Cascades Conference matchup.

Addison outscored Manchester 17-9 in a decisive third quarter to move in front.

Kayli Trumble added 10 for Addison.

Fayette 41, Sand Creek 36 

FAYETTE, Ohio – Tanana Emmendorfer had a double-double for the 1-2 Aggies, but it wasn’t enough in the non-conference game.

Emmendorfer scored 12 points and pulled down 16 rebounds. Scout Robinson had four steals for the Aggies.

“Turnovers and missed free throws were the difference,” Sand Creek coach Wayne Perry said.

The two teams combined to shoot 53 free throws.

Concord 65, Britton Deerfield 27

CONCORD — The Patriots fell to 0-3 on the season in a road matchup against Concord.

Bowling

Jackson at Adrian

ADRIAN — The Maples picked up an SEC White sweep of Jackson as the boys won 23-7 and the girls won 22-8.

The girls team trailed 6-4 after the Baker Games before dominating in match play. Lauren Fisher rolled a 165, while Jailyn Lahring rolled a 151 and Sydney Chesser had a 155 and 147.

The boys team swept the Baker Games to take a quick 10-0 lead. Xander Finkbeiner rolled games of 199 and 186 and Austin Garcia rolled a 196.

Tecumseh at Saline

SALINE — The No. 2 Tecumseh boys and No. 9 Tecumseh girls both picked up 28-2 wins against the Hornets.

The girls were led by Kierra Pinter's 214 game, while Brooke Kosco rolled a 199.

Owen Williams led the boys with a 235 and 221, while Jackson Pollack rolled a 212.

The JV team won 29-1 with Archer MckGibbon's 178 and Tyler Chattel's big 227.

TUESDAY

Boys Basketball

Britton Deerfield 69, Milan 36

BRITTON — Logan Shiels needed 12 points to reach 1,000 for his career and reached the milestone on a 3-pointer in the first half and help the Patriots improve to 5-0.

Shiels scored the first basket of the game and helped BD race out to a 16-2 lead in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, Shiels hit a pair of free throws to make it 18-8 then scored on a layup to put the Patriots up 20-8. His triple from right in front of the Milan bench gave him 1,000 for his career, and the Patriots led 23-9 with 5:34 left in the first half.

The game stopped briefly while Shiels was presented a ball. BD fans on the stage behind the home bench leaped to their feet and held up signs marking the milestone.

Shiels also had 10 rebounds and two assists in limited action as BD held a big lead for most of the second half.

Brayden Shiels scored 11 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the first half, and Colin Johnson had 13 points.

Onsted 64, Hudson 23 

ONSTED — The Wildcats held Hudson scoreless in the second quarter then poured on the offense in the second half to win the LCAA matchup.

Ayden Davis finished with 22 points for the Wildcats (3-2), while JT Hill and Collin Gerken scored 10.

Jackson Jones had 10 points, four rebounds and two steals for the Tigers (1-4).

Clinton 72, Madison 56

CLINTON — The Redwolves handed Madison its second straight defeat as Eli Turner and Jalen Stelzer each scored 20 points.

David Keith scored 13 and Andy Fair had eight for Clinton (2-2), which made eight 3-pointers on the night.

Madison (2-3) got 23 points from Antonio Nieto and 12 from Ayden McKinney.

Tecumseh 47, Parma Western 40

PARMA — After a strong start, Tecumseh went cold in the second and third quarters, but its defense kept it in the game as the offense heated up in the fourth for the win.

Tecumseh (4-0) led 18-11 after the first but was held to three points in the second while also holding the Panthers to three to make it a 21-14 lead at the break. Western took a 29-28 lead into the fourth, where Tecumseh re-took the lead and held on.

Ryan Mossburg had 14 points, four assists and three rebounds, while AJ Bryan had a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards.

Morenci 60, Camden-Frontier 49 

MORENCI — Isaac Shoemaker came out firing, scoring 13 points in the first quarter as Morenci built a 22-5 lead and went on to win the first game of the Garrett Benjamin era.

Shoemaker finished with 19 points, as did Shamus Alcock for 1-3 Morenci.

Dundee 65, Blissfield 56 

DUNDEE — The Royals put some bruises on 6-0 Dundee but couldn’t pull out the road victory.

Blissfield trailed 31-24 at halftime but tied the game going into the final eight minutes.

Brayden Fetzer and Chet Meyer scored 14 points apiece for the Royals, while Gabe Schnoor and Blake Wood both scored 12.

Blissfield is 2-3.

Jefferson 76, Sand Creek 61 

SAND CREEK — The Bears got the best of their former coach Steve Walters, who is now the head coach at Sand Creek.

Rory Eack continued his early season scoring spree with his second 30-point game of the season. He finished with three triples and 34 points, one off his career high.

Trevor Opel scored 18 for the Aggies (2-3).

Jefferson pumped in 11 3-pointers.

Michigan Center 58, Addison 22 

MICHIGAN CENTER — The Cardinals held Addison to seven field goals on the night and took care of business in the Cascades Conference game.

Addison’s Gunner Demeuse scored 16 points, but no other Panther (3-3) had more than one bucket.

Girls Basketball

Madison 46, Clinton 35 

MADISON TWP. — Madison is off to a 3-0 start after beating Clinton in an LCAA contest Tuesday.

Jaeda Parish connected on five 3-pointers and scored 17 points to lead all scorers. Nevaeh Parish had 12 points and Jamairah Powers scored 10 for the Trojans, who held Clinton to 13 points in the first half.

Mieah Rodriguez scored nine points for Clinton, and Kaylie Livingston scored eight.

Onsted 43, Hudson 31 

HUDSON — Despite scoring three points in the second quarter, Onsted took a lead into the half and outscored Hudson by 10 in the second half to win the LCAA game.

Onsted has won back-to-back games and is 2-1. Hudson is 1-2.

Karlie Kimerer scored 22 points, eight rebounds and five steals. She made five 3-pointers.

Hannah Hill had 13 rebounds and 10 points, while JayElle Christian had six boards and three steals. Maddie Borders contributed four assists for the Wildcats.

Taylor Kopin scored 14 for the Tigers while pulling down eight rebounds and having two steals. Teagan Arredondo had 10 points and five boards.

Tecumseh 59, Parma Western 37

PARMA — Tecumseh used a strong third quarter and tough second half defense to come out with a 22-point win against the Panthers.

Tecumseh (2-1) led 28-26 at the half before outscoring Western 22-7 in the third to take a 50-33 lead into the fourth.

Addi Zajac had seven of her 13 points in the third and added 15 rebounds for a double-double, while Alli Zajac had a team-high 18 points and eight rebounds. Chloe Bullinger had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists, while Makayla Schlorf had eight points and two assists.

Blissfield 56, Dundee 21 

BLISSFIELD — The Royal defense clamped down on Dundee early, not allowing a point in the first quarter.

Freshman Evie Brown led Blissfield with 13 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Avery Collins had an all-around solid game with nine points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals. Peyton Tennant had 10 points, and reigning Lenawee County Player of the Week, Leigh Wyman, chipped in with nine points.

The Royals are 2-0.

Adrian 68, Westland John Glenn 21

ADRIAN — Ella Salenbien and Ciara Ernst each put up 16 points while Elanie Gordon netted 10 as the Maples rolled to a non-conference win.

Adrian (2-1) led 17-2 after the first and 35-9 at the half.

Salenbien posted a double-double with 15 rebounds to go with her 16 points and had two steals and a block. Ernst had four rebounds and three assists, and Gordon had three rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Lenawee Christian 47, Hillsdale Academy 20

ADRIAN — After an 0-2 start, the Cougars picked up their first win of the season behind a strong start defensively.

LCS (1-2) led 16-2 after the first and 27-8 at the half.

Callie Anderson had 14 points, six rebounds and three steals, while Izzy Brooks and Brielle Parker each had nine with Brooks getting three steals.

Hudson at Grand Rapids Catholic Central Quad

GRAND RAPIDS — The Tigers traveled to Grand Rapids to take on Division 2 No. 1 Lowell and Plainwell, where Hudson went 1-1 on the night.

The top-ranked Tigers in Division 4 fell to the top-ranked Red Arrows, 46-18. Nicholas Sorrow (120 pounds) and Jacob Pickford (165) each had pins, while Julien Kimling (132) won 4-2 and Coy Perry (157) won a 5-3 decision.

Hudson defeated Plainwell, 53-28. Trey Bolenbaugh (113), Colt Perry (120), Kimling (132), Cole Marry (144), Austin Marry (165), Pickford (170) and Logan Ryan (190) all had pins, while Sorrow (126) won by tech fall.

Clinton at Mason Quad

MASON — The Division 3 fifth-ranked Redwolves got a pair of wins as they beat Haslett, 78-3, and Portland, 56-15.

Bryce Randolph (165), Wyatt Hicks (215), Zachary Taylor (120) and Maurice Ames (144) all had two pins, while Nate Arntz (113) had a pin and major decision. Braylon Long (126) and Connor Younts (138) had a pin and void, Cliff Jones (157) had a major decision and void and Hamza Rafferty (285) had a sudden victory and void.

Sand Creek 34, Reading 33

READING — The Aggies traveled for a dual against the Rangers, where Sand Creek took an exciting victory.

Reading began the night with a 15-6 lead after a close 6-4 decision to start at 150 before the Aggies got a pin from Luke Emery (157) and then voided at 165 and 175.

Daniel Meckley (190) and Jacob Schamburger (215) picked up a pair of decisions, but Reading got a pin at 285 to keep Sand Creek's deficit at nine, 21-12, as the dual turned over to the lower weights. Wyatt Fox (113) and Nicholas Trame (126) each won by tech fall while the Rangers got a pin at 120 to make it a 27-22 dual with three matches left.

Gavin Marks (132) got the big pin for the Aggies to take a 28-27 lead before Reading voided to Grady Thompson at (138) to make 34-28 going into the final match, where Reading got a pin.

LCAA Jamboree at Hillsdale

HILLSDALE — Hillsdale hosted the first LCAA jamboree of the season where Hudson ran away with the top spot and Onsted took second.

The Tigers had a total score of 720.64, beating the Wildcats' 680.7 while Ida was third (629.9). Madison was fourth (614.5) and Clinton was seventh (569.24).

Tecumseh at Chelsea

CHELSEA — The No. 2 Tecumseh boys got upset by the Bulldogs by half of a point after Chelsea had the slight advantage by total pins.

The ninth-ranked girls team cruised to a 28-2 win. Leading the way was Wendy Ketola with a 211, while Kierra Pinter had a 184.

The boys had games of 256 and 211 from Andrew Risinger, while Kaden Salts had games for 244 and 206 and Palmer Ziemer had 225 and 203.

THURSDAY

Boys Basketball

Blissfield 70, Clinton 53

CLINTON — The Royals started strong, the Redwolves battled back, but Blissfield answered as it picked up the LCAA win.

The Royals (3-3, 2-1 LCAA) started the game on a 7-0 run and led 19-6 after the first and led 35-17 at the half, but Clinton began the third with a 12-2 run to get within seven, 37-30, with 3:46 left in the third.

It was then when Gabe Schnoor took over for Blissfield, scoring eight points on a 14-0 run and dishing out two assists on 3-pointers. Schnoor led the way to the win with 14 points, nine rebounds, six assists, four steals and a block.

Blake Wood had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists, Tyler Ganun had 10 points and five rebounds and Chet Meyer added 11 points, four assists and three rebounds. Clinton (2-3, 1-2 LCAA) was led by Jalen Stelzer's 24 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals and Calen Keith's 16 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal.

Britton Deerfield 77, Morenci 45 

BRITTON —Brayden Shiels got off to another hot start, scoring 11 of his 15 points in the first quarter as the Patriots built a 26-7 advantage in the first eight minutes and beat Morenci for a 6-0 start, 2-0 in the TCC.

Logan Shiels scored 13 points, Colin Johnson had 12, Owen Plum had 11 and Ryan Good added 10 for BD. Plum scored all 11 of his points in the first half.

Morenci (1-4, 0-1 TCC) was led by Jonas Castillo and Talon Kruse, both of whom scored nine points.

Onsted 51, Madison 41 

ONSTED — Onsted held Madison to three field goals and eight points in the first half, but the Trojans made a game out of it in the second half.

“It was a tough first half,” Madison coach Erik Thompson said. “I’m very proud of the effort, energy and enthusiasm the boys had as we were able to battle to get the game close in the second half.”

Antonio Nieto led Madison (2-4, 0-3 LCAA) with 15 points and five assists, while Bryce Jordan had nine rebounds and three assists. Jayden Saad sank four triples in the second half and finished with 14 points for Madison.

Onsted (4-2, 2-1 LCAA) got 17 points from Ayden Davis and 15 from Aidan Paquin.

Adrian 80, Ann Arbor Central 35

ADRIAN — The Maples continued their strong start to the 2023-24 season by cruising against Ann Arbor Central Academy.

The Maples (5-1) led 45-22 at the half. Stevie Elam had 26 points, while Sean Parker added 14 and Jaxson Francis had 10.

Whiteford 67, Lenawee Christian 65 

OTTAWA LAKE — The Cougars squandered an 18-point lead and fell on the road in a TCC matchup with Whiteford.

LCS (3-2, 1-1 TCC) led 25-9 after the first quarter and was in front 32-14 midway through the second quarter. The Bobcats cut the lead to 12 at halftime, to five at the end of the third quarter and tied the game 61-61 with at the 4:02 mark of the fourth quarter.

Brandon Summer’s free throw with 32 seconds left tied the game at 65-65 before the Bobcats held for a last shot and won the game.

Aidan Kaulins hit seven 3-pointers and scored 24 to lead the Cougars. Summer added 16 and Jaxon Salenbien 13.

Hillsdale 37, Hudson 34 

HUDSON — Isaac St. John scored 18 points but was the only Tiger in double figures in a close LCAA loss to Hillsdale.

Jackson Jones and Drew Engle-Wendt scored six each for Hudson (1-4, 0-2 LCAA), which was held scoreless in the third quarter.

Tecumseh Quad

TECUMSEH — Tecumseh had a strong night on the mat as it beat Saline, 50-22, and Ypsilanti, 70-12, in a pair of SEC duals.

Going 2-0 on the night was Aiden Atkin (157) with two pins, Grant Gnodtke (138) with a pin and tech fall, Max Marten (144) with a pin and major decision. Maximus Walker (113) had a pin and decision and Tucker Cole (150), Cooper Barkway (165), Wyatt Andrews (120) and Carson Fields (126) finished with a pin and void.

Adrian at Chelsea Quad

CHELSEA — The Maples began SEC competition by taking down the defending SEC White champs, Chelsea, 34-33, before falling to a strong Temperance Bedford team, 54-21

Diego Orozco (113) and John Breckel (175) each went 2-0.

Adrian at Ann Arbor Skyline

ANN ARBOR — The Maples picked up a pair of wins against Skyline with the boys rolling, 20-10, and the girls winning, 28-2.

In the boys matchup, Adrian trailed 6-4 after the Baker Games and took six of the 10 matches to get the overall win. Austin Garcia rolled a 202 and 197, and Gabe Wood rolled a 161 and 159.

On the girls side, the Maples went up 10-0 in the Baker Games with Sydney Chesher rolling games of 190 and 147 while Jailyn Lahring rolled a 142.

Jonesville 47, Addison 25 

ADDISON — The Panthers fell behind early and couldn’t recover in a Cascades Conference loss.

Taylor Jezierski led the Panthers (1-3, 0-2 Cascacdes) with nine points.

Blissfield 57, Clinton 29

BLISSFIELD — The Royals celebrated their Division 3 runners-up from last season with a banner ceremony, and senior Avery Collins had a banner night with 16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and five steals.

Blissfield (3-0, 2-0 LCAA) held a 27-10 lead at the half. Zoey Sierer led the Redwolves (1-3, 0-2 LCAA) with 13 points, while June Miller added 14 for the Royals.

Madison 36, Onsted 28

MADISON TWP. — The Trojans improved to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the LCAA with a strong fourth quarter.

Madison and the Wildcats (2-2, 1-1 LCAA) were tied, 8-8, and the Trojans took a slim 17-15 lead into the half. Madison led 22-19 going into the fourth, where the Trojans outscored Onsted 14-9.

Caylan Sower had eight of her 10 points in the fourth. Karlie Kimerer had nine points for Onsted.

Lenawee Christian 36, Sand Creek 12

SAND CREEK — Emilia Yatzek had a strong game as she led the Cougars to a second-straight win and first in TCC play.

Yatzek put up 14 points and nine rebounds while the LCS (2-2, 1-0 TCC) defense held the Aggies to five made baskets.

Hudson 30, Hillsdale 25

HILLSDALE — The Tigers snapped a two-game skid as they beat the Hornets in LCAA play.

Hudson (2-2, 1-1 LCAA) got 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals from Taylor Kopin, while Teagan Arredondo had nine points, two assists and two steals.

Grass Lake 50, Tecumseh 40

TECUMSEH — Tecumseh had a strong start but struggled shooting in the second and fourth as Grass Lake picked up the win.

Tecumseh (2-2) led 17-9 and held a slim 22-21 lead going into the half. Tecumseh led 36-32 before being held to four points in the fourth.

Addi Zajac posted another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while Alli Zajac had 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists, one block and a steal and Ashlyn Moorehead had 10 points, three assists and a block.

Summerfield 47, Britton Deerfield 26

PETERSBURG — The Patriots fell to 0-4 and 0-1 in the TCC after falling to the Bulldogs.

BD fell into an early hole, trailing 16-5 after the first and 23-13 at the half before Summerfield really pulled away, outscoring the Patriots 24-13 in the second half.

Alivia Salenbien had eight points for BD.

Manning Vieau Invitational

BRIGHTON — Girls from Blissfield, Clinton, Hudson and Sand Creek wrestling competed at the Manning Vieau Invite.

Clinton's Raven Aldridge won the 155 title by going 3-0 with three pins while Faith Blackburn (135) took second, going 2-1 with two pins.

Hudson's Aubree McClain (110) took third, going 3-1 with a pin and major decision, and Sand Creek's Madyson Monroe (170) took third by going 2-1 with two pins. Blissfield had no placers.

Boys Basketball

Jonesville 47, Addison 25

JONESVILLE — After a 3-1 start, the Panthers have lost three-straight, all Cascades Conference games, and are 3-4 and 0-3 in league play.

Addison led 10-9 after the first, but trailed 23-18 at the half. The Comets pulled away in the third, outscoring Addison 18-7 to take a 41-25 lead into the fourth.

Drew Spink had 11 points while Josh Ray had 10 points.

FINDLAY, Ohio — The Division 4 top-ranked Tigers competed in the Roughneck Duals this weekend, going 9-1 on the weekend and also earn head coach Scott Marry his 900th dual victory.

Hudson took on 10 Ohio schools, beating Defiance (66-18), Vandalia Butler (52-12), Mechanicsburg (65-10), Napoleon (39-24), Archbold (62-12), Ayersville (66-15), Liberty Center (52-24), Anthony Wayne (72-4) and Wauseon (52-24) while falling to Perrysburg.

Hartland Tournament

HARTLAND — The Division 3 fifth-ranked Clinton team took second at the Hartland Tournament, scoring 187 while Hartland had 313.

The Redwolves were led by two first-place finishes, with Bryce Randolph (165) going 3-0 with two pins and a tech fall while Connor Younts (132) went 3-0 with two tech falls.

Going second on the day was Cliff Jones (150) going 3-1 with a pin, Hamza Rafferty (285) going 2-1 with two pins, Zach Taylor (113) going 2-1 with two pins, Braylon Long (126) 2-1 with two tech falls and Maurice Ames (138) going 2-1 with a pin and tech fall.

Skyline Invite

ANN ARBOR — Tecumseh had a strong day at the Ann Arbor Skyline Invite, taking second out of 14 teams.

Dexter won with a score of 187, while Tecumseh had a team score of 179 led by three first-place finishes.

Maximus Walker (113) went 3-0 with three pins, while Tucker Cole (150) and Max Bledsoe (215) each went 3-0 with two pins.

Sand Creek Holiday Tournament

SAND CREEK — The Aggies hosted 13 other schools, including Adrian, Blissfield, Morenci and Onsted, and the hosts took third with a score of 143 behind Laingsburg (227) and Jackson (163).

Adrian's B-team was fourth (142.5), Blissfield was sixth (115), Onsted was eighth (112) and Morenci was 13th (40).

Sand Creek's Wyatt Fox (113) took first, going 3-0 with two pins and a major decision, while Jacob Schamburger (215) took second, going 3-1 with three pins.

The Maples got a first from Nehemiah Vasquez (144), going 4-0 with four pins, while Blissfield's Gage Rothman (132) went 4-0 with three pins and a major.

Onsted got a pair of second-place finishes from Joey Denkins (138), going 3-1 with a pin, and Teagan Cunningham, (132), going 3-1 with two pins and a major. Morenci's Anthony Perez (285) went 2-1 with two pins.

Johnson Monette Duals

WILLIAMSTON — The Division 3 ninth-ranked Madison team went 1-1 in duals at Williamston, beating the hosts, 40-36, after falling to Lakewood, 40-32.

Jalonn Borders (157) went 2-0 with two pins, Malaki Mosher (113) went 2-0 with a void and tech fall, Lucas Dopp (120) and Landon Mohr (132) went 2-0 with a pin each while Lukas Leonard (138) had a pin and major.

Boys Basketball

Lenawee Christian 87, Oakland Christian 67

ADRIAN — The high-scoring Cougars showed off their offensive potential as LCS improved to 4-2 on the season

LCS, which is averaging 69.2 points per game, got four in double figures and knocked down 14 3-pointers.

Brandon Summer led with 21 points, 11 in the fourth, while Daniel Skrupsky had 18 points, Jaxon Salenbien had 14 and Aidan Kaulins added 11.

Onsted Invite

ONSTED — Hudson posted the top score overall while the host Wildcats posted the top score of the Division 3 teams at the annual Onsted Invite.

The Tigers had a team score of 727.42, while Onsted was the only other team to eclipse 700 with a total of 703.16. Clinton posted a score of 614.8 to take fifth in Division 4, while Madison scored 594.2 as the Trojans were fourth in Division 3.
