High school cross country: Colin Cernansky, Daniela Scheffler win Riverside titles
PAINESVILLE — The winning at Painesville Riverside continued for Marlington's Colin Cernansky and Lake's Daniela Scheffler on Saturday night.
Cernansky and Scheffler successfully defended their Division I titles at the Riverside Kickoff Classic Night Cross Country Invitational. The fourth annual event has become one of the most popular season-opening meets in Ohio.
Cernansky and the Dukes, the two-time defending Division II state champions, raced in the big-school division for the third straight year. For the second straight time, it was a battle to the finish between Cernansky and Copley's Dylan Wood.
Cernansky's winning time Saturday was as 16:08.62. Wood's time was 16:08.97. A year ago, Cernansky beat Wood by 39 one-hundredths of a second.
Scheffler's winning time was 18:52.16.
Marlington freshman Irelyn Johnson had a successful regular-season start to her high school career at Riverside. She was runner-up in the Division II-III girls race,

Minerva, Sandy Valley win team titles at Claymont
Minerva was able to get the season off to a flying start by winning the boys and girls big division championships at the Claymont Early Bird Invitational.
Led by Annabelle Crissman’s win in 21:17.44, the Lions finished 1 through 4 individually in the girls race. Grasyn Rettig came in third in the boys race.
Fairless’ Andrew Hearn was the top area finisher in the boys race. He came in second.
Sandy Valley won the girls small division team title. Casey Russell finished fourth to lead the Cardinals.
Jackson has successful day at Solon
Elliot Zuckett won the boys race and Eli Ilg came in second to lead Jackson to the team title at the Solon Invitational.
Zuckett’s winning time was 16:11.3. Ilg finished just two-tenths of a second behind him.
The Polar Bears were runners-up in the girls race.
Perry’s Connor Reed wins at Kenston
Perry’s Connor Reed won the boys race at Kenston’s Frank Gibas Invitational.
Reed’s winning time was 16:22.0. He outdueled Chardon’s Thomas Nelson by nine-tenths of a second.
The Panthers finished fifth in the 13-team field.
