Hawks waive power forward Cavanaugh

Rather than pay power forward Tyler Cavanaugh a $450,000 contract guarantee for next season, the Atlanta Hawks waived him on Friday.

Cavanaugh, who went undrafted in 2017 after playing at George Washington but played for the Hawks' Summer League team, caught on when injuries ravaged Atlanta's front line. He signed a two-year contract during the season.

Cavanaugh averaged 4.7 points, 3.3 rebounds and 13.3 minutes in 39 games (one start).

The way Cavanaugh's contract was set up, much of his salary for next season would have been guaranteed if he was still with the team through Tuesday, the day of the NBA draft lottery.

Cavanaugh sprained an ankle in early February, and it hampered his play for much of the season thereafter.
