Haslett III seals comeback victory for Fond du Lac boys basketball with game-winning layup

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fond du Lac 63, Appleton East 61

APPLETON - Down by as many as nine points, the Cardinals (7-5, 5-3) pulled off a thrilling comeback victory over the Patriots (3-9, 2-7) to steal a road win in the Fox Valley Association.

Marvin Haslett III hit the game-winning layup and finished with a team-high 24 points to lead Fondy. Rocky Barfknecht added 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Cardinals.

Joey La Chapell scored a game-high 33 points and grabbed seven rebounds with four assists to lead Appleton East. Jacob Weisbach tacked on 11 points for the Patriots.

Winnebago Lutheran 81, St. Mary's Springs 67

FOND DU LAC - Springs (9-6, 4-4) led by one at the half, but the Vikings (9-5, 7-1) successfully defended their home court, coming from behind to win by double-digits over their Flyway rivals.

Noah Gensler scored a game-high 29 points to lead WLA. Sam Loehr drained five 3-pointers, finishing with 19 points and a team-high nine assists, and Gannan Schwartz had 15 points and six assists for the Vikings.

Noah Moul paced the Ledgers with 22 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double, blocked four shots and grabbed three steals. John Coon added 21 points, five boards, five assists and two steals for Springs.

Lomira 83, North Fond du Lac 35

LOMIRA - The Lions (8-6, 6-2) manhandled the Orioles (0-15, 0-8) for another win in the Flyway.

Jake Broeske led Lomira with 21 points. Logan Menzer drained four 3-pointers, finishing with 14 points, Jackson Goebel added 13, and Sam Schraufnegel had 12 points with six rebounds for the Lions.

George Giese and Ya'Liez Reed each tallied seven points to lead North Fondy.

Oakfield 41, Palmyra-Eagle 39

HORICON - After trailing by five at the half, the Oaks (8-4, 5-2 Trailways-East) came back to defeat the Panthers (11-3, 4-2 Trailways-South) in the Trailways Crossover event held at Horicon Elementary School.

Mitch Moser led Oakfield with 11 points.

Noah Taylor scored a game-high 16 points to lead Palmyra-Eagle.

Laconia 89, Mayville 49

ROSENDALE - The Spartans (7-5, 4-4) walloped the Cardinals (2-6, 2-11) by 40 to even their record in the Flyway.

Ethan Pinno went 7-of-10 from beyond the arc to lead Laconia with 32 points, along with two steals. Keeton Grade added 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Cash Farrell and Nick Blank each chipped in with eight points apiece.

Omro 62, Campbellsport 40

CAMPBELLSPORT - The Foxes (11-3, 8-0) continued their dominance throughout the Flyway with a 22-point win over the Cougars (3-11, 1-7).

Keenan Rahn scored a game-high 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead Omro with a double-double. Ryan Schoeni followed closely with 18 points and Mason Huth had 10 for the Foxes.

Ethan Pickering led Campbellsport with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

No. 5 (D-3) Kettle Moraine Lutheran 57, No. 1 (D-3) Waupun 52

WAUPUN - The No. 1-ranked Warriors (14-2, 6-1) dropped their first East Central contest of the season to the fifth-ranked Chargers (12-3, 5-1) in a clash between two of the Top-5 teams in Division 3.

After a low-scoring first half, KML held a five-point advantage over Waupun.

Kayl Petersen led the Warriors with a 17-point, 15-rebound double-double while also dishing out six assists and collecting three blocks. Rowan Harder added 13 points and Lydia Aalsma rounded out the Warriors' scoring leaders with 11 points.

Makenzie Luehring scored a game-high 36 points for the Chargers, including 12-for-15 (80%) from the free throw line, and grabbed seven rebounds with four steals.

FOND DU LAC - The Patriots (9-5, 5-4) easily handled the Cardinals (4-12, 1-9), building a 15-point lead at the half and pulling away after the break to pick up a victory in the Fox Valley Association.

Fondy senior Brooke Butler became the seventh player in school history to eclipse the 1000 career points mark, finishing with a team-high 10 for the game. Butler currently sits at 1009 points, needing just 11 more to pass both Ana Wurtz (1011, Class of 2006) and Carissa Schessow (1019, Class of 1999) to move into fifth place all-time.

Lilly Meulemans drained five three-pointers on her way to a game-high 26 points and Ella Sweeney added four threes, finishing with 20 for the Patriots.

Central Wisconsin Christian 61, Hustisford 14

WAUPUN - The Crusaders (5-9, 2-5) cruised to victory over the winless Falcons (0-14, 0-8) to collect an easy win in the Trailways-East.

Tabitha Buwalda led CWC with 14 points and Samantha Braskamp added 13 for the Crusaders.

Craig Belcher Boys & Girls Invite

Oakfield competed at the event hosted by Wisconsin Lutheran High School in Milwaukee.

The boys finished in 13th place out of 17 teams with a team score of 105 and the girls finished in 13th place out of 14 teams with a team score of 23. Here are the results:

Mayville competed at the 12-team invitational hosted by Omro High School, taking 10th place with a team score of 51. Here are the final results:

Herb Tyler Invitational

Campbellsport, Waupun and Laconia all participated at the event hosted by Sheboygan North High School. The Cougars tied for 11th place with Oostburg, compiling a team score of 105, the Warriors took 24th place with a team score of 51, and the Spartans finished tied with Grafton for 27th with a team score of 40.

Here are the participants who placed for Campbellsport:

138: Gavin Pickering (18-11) placed 6th. 165: Aydan Meilahn (19-10) placed 7th. 215: Joseph Volz (28-3) placed 2nd.

Here are the participants who placed for Laconia:

BOYS HOCKEY

Northland Pines 5, Waupun 3

EAGLE RIVER - The Warriors (8-7-2, 2-3 Badgerland) lost control of a 2-0 lead in the second period, falling to the Eagles (8-9, 2-4 Great Northern) in a non-conference matchup.

Haiden Rieder scored back-to-back power play goals, both assisted by Cade Hartgerink, to give Waupun an early advantage.

Sam Shrock responded for Northland Pines with a pair of goals and Morgan DePuydt added one on the power-play to go ahead, 3-2, temporarily, until Mason Holz earned a power-play goal of his own (assisted by Chase Beahm) to tie it at 3 for the Warriors.

Shrock then once again grabbed the lead for Northland Pines, securing a hat trick with his third goal, just a few minutes later and Josh Graves iced the game with a short-handed empty net goal to give the Eagles the win.

Blake Colker made 18 saves for Waupun and Evrett Leslie made 25 saves for Northland Pines.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Warbirds 4, Brookfield 1

BROOKFIELD - The Warbirds (11-5-1, 3-2-1) melted the Glacier (5-9-2, 1-5), scoring once in each of the first two periods and twice more in the third to pick up an Eastern Shores victory.

The Warbirds outshot Brookfield, 47-10.

Ella Getz opened the scoring on an assist from Hannah Wilson and Chloe Tobin cashed in an assist from Abby Waara to net the Warbirds' second goal.

Allison Waara made it 3-0 in the third period before Madeline MacLeod responded with the first goal of the game for the Glacier. Waara then grabbed one more goal at the end of the game with an empty net.

Emma Jillig had nine saves for the Warbirds while Macy Blooming had 43 saves out of 46 shots on goal.
