Hamilton earns No. 1 seed for Section III's fall volleyball playoffs

The Hamilton Emerald Knights have won their last 10 matches and the Center State Conference's lone fall volleyball school enters Section III's Class D playoffs as a No. 1 seed.

Competing in the Onondaga High School League in a Patriot National Division that also features LaFayette, the No. 1 Class C seed, and Syracuse's Living Word Academy, the reigning Class D sectional champion, Hamilton (15-3) split with both schools, sectional powers dating back to their time in winter competition, and earned a second place finish with an 8-2 mark. LaFayette's Lancers (17-2, 9-1 OHSL Patriot National) won the league outright with a 3-2 win over Living Word Academy Thursday; a victory Living Word Academy (13-4, 7-3 OHSL Patriot National), which took a 2-1 lead, would have created a three-way tie.

All five fall Class D teams are entered in playoffs with Oct. 30 semifinals and a Nov. 4 championship match. Bishop Grimes (8-11) of Syracuse, the No. 4 seed, defeated winless OnTech Charter (0-18) 3-0 for the second time in five days Monday to earn a trip to Hamilton for the semifinals. The other semifinal sends No. 3 Bishop Ludden (9-8) across Syracuse to play Living Word Academy.

FOOTBALL PLAYOFF PAIRINGS: Section III sets seeds for 2023 football playoffs

Bishop Grimes was a 25-17, 25-12, 25-10 winner Monday and a 25-9, 25-8, 25-9 winner Thursday. The Cobras were beaten 3-1 and 3-0 by Hamilton in league play during the regular season, more recently 25-14, 25-20, 25-17 on the road Oct. 12.

The other No. 1 seeds are Class AAA Liverpool, Class AA West Genesee, Class A Jamesville-DeWitt and Class B Westhill. Jamesville-DeWitt and Westhill are defending champions from 2002 when the tournament was contested in five classes. The winter playoffs have been contested in four classes.

Jamesville-DeWitt will host the fall finals.
