H.S. Roundup: Berne Union and Fairfield Christian pick hard-earned tourney wins

Fairfield Christian Academy 2, Madison Christian 0: The Knights received an outstanding pitching performance from A.J. Holbrook as they avoided the upset in their hard-fought Division IV second-round tournament win.

Holbrook pitched the complete game shutout, allowing only three hits and striking out six. Holbrook also had a key suicide squeeze in the top of the sixth inning that brought in the second run.

Leading the offense were Matthew Keener and Aiden Langwasser, with two hits each.  Keener scored once and Langwasser scored and drove in the first run of the game.

The No. 2 seeded Knights advance and will face No. 3 seed Galion Northmor at 5 p.m. Monday in a district semifinal at Beavers Field.

Berne Union 5, Marion Elgin 3: The Rockets overcame an early 3-1 deficit and pulled out a hard-fought win over the Comets in a Division IV second-round tournament game.

Elgin led 3-1 in the second inning before Berne Union plated two runs in the third inning to tie things up. The Rockets took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth inning.

Cade Pugh started and pitched four-plus innings. Austin Snyder came on in relief to pitch the final two and two-thirds innings to pick up the win. He had four strikeouts.

Offensively, Nate Nemeth had a triple and scored a run, Hudson Gerken had a hit and two RBI, Cooper Mitchell had a hit and scored two runs, Russ Blank had a hit and an RBI and Clayton Moore had a hit and an RBI. Luke Shafer added a hit and scored a run.

The No. 4 seed Rockets (16-9) advance and will face top-seeded Newark Catholic at 5 p.m. Monday in a district semifinal.

Washington Court House 4, Fairfield Union 1: The Falcons fell short in their Southeast District Division II sectional final against the top-seeded Blue Lions.

Ronnie Rowley went the distance, giving up six hits and striking out six.

Offensively, the Falcons were led by Chase Harmon’s multi-hit day. Rowley and Malachi Palmer also added a hit each in the game.
