Gymnastics: Benson/KMS earns 2nd at conference meet

Feb. 9—MELROSE — The Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg gymnastics team took second place at the West Central Conference Championships on Friday.

Benson/KMS, ranked No. 14 in Class A, totaled 137.975 points. Melrose, the top-ranked team in Class A, won the conference meet at 143.075. Albany was third with 129.975 and Paynesville/Eden Valley-Watkins was seventh (109.475).

Lexi Hoberg was third in the all-around (35.200) and Gwen Wilcox finished fifth (34.000) for Benson/KMS among the gymnasts competing in the all-around. Melrose's Hannah Hoppe won the all-around title at 36.625.

Hoberg, a junior, placed in the top five in all four events. She was fourth on bars (8.550), tied senior teammate Olivia Noble for fourth on floor (8.875) and took fifth on vault (8.900) and beam (8.875).

Wilcox, also a junior, had one top-five finish of the four events. She was fifth on bars (8.400), finishing in sixth on both vault (8.875) and floor (8.775) and tied for 13th on beam (7.950).

Sophie Hilleren, another junior for Benson/KMS, cracked into the top five on beam. She tied for third with Melrose's Josie Eveslage, who was second in the all-around, with a score of 9.050.

Hoberg, Wilcox, and Hilleren all earned All-WCC honors and Noble was an All-WCC Honorable Mention.

Benson/KMS was 5-1 in conference duals with its only loss coming against the Dutchmen. It was second in the WCC standings behind Melrose. It finished the regular season with a 10-2 overall record.
