Girls soccer playoffs: Westlake, Camarillo, T.O., and Oak Park advance to quarterfinals

KK Chowana netted a hat trick and Layla Simon had a goal and two assists as the Westlake High girls soccer team defeated visiting Moorpark 4-0 in an all-county CIF-Southern Section Division 1 second-round match on Saturday.

Chowana gave the Warriors the lead in the 15th minute and doubled it in the 39th, when Simon was fouled in the penalty area and the referee awarded a penalty kick.

“I thought scoring in the first half was huge,” Westlake coach Frank Marino said. “They came out in the second half and put it on us, but our back line held strong. (Goalkeeper) Sierra Spencer made a huge save.”

Chowana and Simon scored in the second half as Westlake pulled away.

“KK did a great job of finishing,” Marino said. “Layla created some great chances for us.”

Marino was worried that his team would overlook the defending Division 3 section and regional champions, after the Warriors handed the Musketeers a 4-0 defeat in December.

“Last time we played them we were at an advantage,” Marino said. “Some of their better players were hurt. I was cautioning our team not to be overconfident.”

With the win, Westlake advances to the quarterfinals for the third straight season. The Warriors will host Rancho Cucamonga-Etiwanda on Wednesday.
