Giants OL Diehl to undergo surgery

New York Giants offensive lineman David Diehl was scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday afternoon to repair instability in his right thumb and is expected to miss six weeks.

Diehl struggled at right tackle through the first two preseason games and was moved to left guard for Tuesday's practice. He wore a cast on his hand, but said it didn't affect him.

"I've played through everything once before already, so..." Diehl said Tuesday when asked if he could play through the injury.

The surgery was to be performed by Dr. Robert Hotchkiss at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan.

With Diehl out, the Giants could move Kevin Boothe back to left guard and insert Jim Cordle at center until David Baas returns from his knee injury. Baas has said he expects to return in time for the regular-season opener Sept. 8 at the Dallas Cowboys.
