Giants’ Jason Garrett: Working with Joe Judge has been a ‘learning experience’

New York Giants offensive coordinator Jason Garrett appeared on the hour-long Great Dane podcast this week hosted by former teammate and Pro Football Hall of Fame placekicker Morten Andersen.

Garrett and Andersen regaled the audience with tales of their long football careers and their time with the Giants back in 2001 when Garrett served as Andersen’s holder.

There was some current Giants talk on the show. Andersen asked Garrett if he served as counsel to Giants head coach Joe Judge, who is now entering his second season.

The answer was not what Andersen expected. Garrett, who was the Dallas Cowboys’ head coach for a decade, said he is actually learning a lot from Judge.

“I think Joe’s done a great job so far,” said Garrett. “From my perspective I’m really kind of learning from him. He’s been around great coaches – coach (Nick) Saban at Alabama and coach (Bill) Belichick up in New England.

“I think he has a really clear idea about how he wants to run this program and that’s something that I was drawn to. I’m learning a lot from him. I can be a resource for however he wants to use me. From experiences I’ve had in the past. . . I’m always there for him. I have my notebook in my hand every time I go into one of his meetings. I want to learn from him. It’s been a great learning experience for me so far.”

The Giants’ offense was ranked 31st in the NFL last season in Garrett’s first year on the job. To be fair, the Giants were without star running back Saquon Barkley for 14 and half games and operated with an offensive line that had two rookies and a center that never played the position before.
