How’s this for a statistic — nine different Oklahoma Wesleyan University batters each ripped an extra base hit in a 22-1 win to open series’ play last weekend?

With that kind of momentum behind them, the Eagles proceeded to sweep Sterling (Kan.) College, 12-1 and 6-1, to finish out the regular season.

The Eagles improved to 36-14, and 22-11 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, to bolster their credentials for an at-large berth.

Following are summaries of the weekend sweep.

OKWU 22, STERLING 1

The Eagles crushed two homers (Drenis Ozuna, Jordyn Smith), one triple (Josh Logan) and six doubles (Tommy Davis, Luis Anitgua, Jesus Rojas, A’Darius Council, Dane Fraser and Hector Manon) to chop down Sterling (Kan.) College like a wind-whipped wheat crop.

By the time the Eagle batters finished their whacking, OKWU had harvested 19 hits and 13 RBIs.

Ozuna started the assault with a two-run homer in the first inning — which would be the game winning hit.

Smith belted a two-run circuit clout and Logan launched a three-run triple.

Smith amassed five RBIs for the game, followed by Ozuna with four, Logan with three, Grant Hershberger with two and Manon with two.

Eagle pitcher Matthew Atencio inspired more joy out of the Sterling offense than a skunk on a wedding cake.

OKWU 12, STERLING 1

Pitcher Evan Foor snapped off his second complete-game on a four-hitter, with one walk and eight K’s.

The offense, meanwhile, took care of its business, led by Manon with a grand slam homer and Rojas with a three-run moon launch.

Council also homered; Smith smashed a triple and Davis doubled.

OKWU 6, STERLING 1

OKWU head coach Kirk Kelley utilized pitching by committee — five arms, none of which working more than two innings.

Starter Michael Mendoza didn’t allow a hit or run in the first two innings to set the pattern.

Smith continued the weekend homer barrage by delivering a two-run satellite.
