Gastonia, Shelby high school top performers: 4 area wrestlers claim NCHSAA state gold

Here is a daily list of the top performers from Cleveland, Gaston and Lincoln counties during the 13th week of winter sports action.

Our weekly top performers list and athlete of the week nominees are compiled courtesy of information provided to The Gaston Gazette and Shelby Star by coaches, athletic directors or team statisticians through emails, MaxPreps or mentioning @JoeLHughesII in game results and highlights posted to X, formerly known as Twitter.

Saturday, Feb. 17

Wrestling

Four area grapplers claimed NCHSAA state gold Saturday in Greensboro.

Big South 3A particularly had a day, with three wrestlers leaving as newly crowned state champions.

Among them was Kings Mountain sophomore Jaelen Culp, who capped a 57-0 season with a 3A title at 157 pounds. Culp handed Central Davidson’s Nathan McCartney his first loss of the season via a 5-4 decision.

Stuart Cramer’s Bentley Sly repeated as a state champion, adding a title at 132 pounds with the one earned last winter at 120 pounds.

He claimed top honors via technical fall over Montgomery Central’s Anthony Munoz. Sly finished with a 51-1 record this season, his only loss to Central Cabarrus’ Charleston Baglio, who won 3A state gold at 138 pounds.

North Gaston’s James Weaver won the 3A state title at 150 pounds. He defeated Enka’s Bodhi McCormack via an 8-3 decision.

Lincolnton’s Geviaunta Walker capped a 54-0 campaign with a 2A state title. Walker defeated Mount Pleasant Colt Kluttz via fall to become Lincolnton's first state champion in school history.

Boys basketball

Isaac Byers Jr., Ashbrook: Scored a game-high 25 points in an 82-66 win over Hunter Huss.

Ayron Jackson, Ashbrook: Scored 15 points.

Jamari Smith, Ashbrook: Scored 24 points.

A.J. Adams, Crest: Scored 25 points in a 79-67 loss to Kings Mountain. Adams scored his 1,000th career point in the contest.

Lyrik Pettis, Crest: Scored 22 points.

Deviyus Harris-Byrd, Forestview: Had 15 points, four rebounds and three assists in an 89-78 overtime loss to Stuart Cramer.

Alex Helton, Forestview: Had 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals.

Dashawn Patton, Forestview: Had 16 points and three rebounds.

Daijhon Young, Forestview: Scored 18 points to go with seven rebounds and two steals.

Elijah Sherrill, Highland Tech: Had 20 points in a 71-59 loss to East Gaston.

Elijah Whitted, Highland Tech: Scored a team-high 24 points to go with four rebounds.

Trimell Dunlap, Hunter Huss: Earned a double-double (20 points, 12 rebounds) to go with five steals, five blocks and two assists in an 82-66 loss at Ashbrook.

Z-Man Gladden, Hunter Huss: Had 17 points, four rebounds and three steals.

Zii Phillips, Hunter Huss: Scored 10 points to go with three rebounds and three assists.

Bradley Floyd, Kings Mountain: Had 29 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a 79-67 win over Crest.

Kee’donn Linney, Kings Mountain: Scored 22 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two rebounds.

Tucker Robinette, Kings Mountain: Had 19 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Landen Lyerly, Lincolnton: Had 15 points and eight rebounds in a 67-51 win over West Lincoln.

Tyler McClain, Lincolnton: Finished with 16 points and six rebounds.

Khalil Yarbrough, Lincolnton: Scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half, in addition to collecting eight rebounds.

Kelan Flowers, Lincoln Charter: Scored 23 points in an 83-68 win over Mountain Island Charter.

Krishtan Flowers, Lincoln Charter: Had 13 points.

David Reed IV, Lincoln Charter: Scored a team-high 24 points.

Carson Engstrand, North Lincoln: Had 18 points and five rebounds in a 70-52 win over East Lincoln.

Kellen Karr, North Lincoln: Had 16 points and seven rebounds.

Ty Sanders, North Lincoln: Scored 11 points to go with five rebounds and four assists.

John Carmichael, Piedmont Community Charter: Had 13 points,three rebounds, two assists, a steal and three blocks in a 102-38 win over Apprentice Academy to clinch the Metro 8 1A title.

Will Clanton, Piedmont Community Charter: Scored 10 points to go with two rebounds, two steals and two blocks.

Bobby Erwin, Piedmont Community Charter: Had 19 points

Henry Peprah, Piedmont Community Charter: Led his team with 20 points to go with seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Victor Plessmoses, Piedmont Community Charter: Had 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals.

D.J. Cross, Stuart Cramer: Had 11 points, two rebounds and two steals in an 89-78 overtime win over Forestview..

Gavin Jordan, Stuart Cramer: Had 10 points, five assists and three rebounds.

Amari Littlejohn, Stuart Cramer: Scored 14 points along with seven assists, two rebounds and a steal.

Darius Sykes, Stuart Cramer: Had 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks.

Taelan Whitley, Stuart Cramer: Recorded a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds).

Mikalister Anderson, West Lincoln: Scored a team-high 20 points in a 67-51 loss to Lincolnton.

Girls basketball

Nevaeh Blackwell, Crest: Scored 12 points in a 60-14 win over Kings Mountain.

De’kaylia Davis, Crest: Scored 15 points.

Monica Surratt, Crest: Had a team-high 16 points.

Kiara Anderson, East Lincoln: Scored 25 points to go with nine rebounds, six assists and four steals in a 78-46 win over North Lincoln. With the win, the Lady Mustangs completed a perfect run through Western Foothills 3A for the second straight season.

Emma Montanari, East Lincoln: Scored 15 points to go with eight rebounds, five blocks, three assists and a steal.

Lane Pethal, East Lincoln: Recorded a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Taniyah Thomas, East Lincoln: Had 15 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Blair Riley, Forestview: Scored 14 points in a 60-52 loss to Stuart Cramer.

Miangel Thompson, Forestview: Scored 14 points.

Myla Hoover, Hunter Huss: Scored a game-high 23 points in a 45-38 win over Ashbrook.

Brooklyn Swann, Hunter Huss: Recorded a double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) along with three assists, two steals and two blocks.

Hailey Hagler, North Lincoln: Scored a team-high 12 points in a 78-46 loss to East Lincoln.

Ally Smith, North Lincoln: Scored 10 points.

Lauren French, South Point: Recorded a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) during the Lady Raiders’ 68-10 win over North Gaston.

Amya Graham, South Point: Scored the 1,000th point of her career as part of a 19-point, 10-rebound performance.

Oshauna Holland, Stuart Cramer: Recorded a double-double with 34 points and 10 rebounds, along with eight steals, five assists and three blocks in a 60-52 win over Forestview.

Hadley Womack, Stuart Cramer: Had 11 points, five steals, four assists and three rebounds.

Zoey Owenby, West Lincoln: Had 14 points, four rebounds and three assists in a 55-53 win over Lincolnton.

Carolina Robinson, West Lincoln: Earned a double-double (28 points, 12 rebounds) to go with nine blocks, two steals and an assist.

Wednesday, Feb. 14

Boys basketball

Talon Dalton, Cherryville: Scored 12 points in a 62-59 loss to NCSSM: Morganton.

Darrien Floyd, Cherryville: Had 13 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Rayshawn Sewell, Cherryville: Scored a team-high 15 points.

John Carmichael, Piedmont Community Charter: Had 18 points, six rebounds, five blocks and four steals in a 67-62 win over Bradford Prep.

Bobby Erwin, Piedmont Community Charter: Scored 16 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.

Xavier Wilcher, Piedmont Community Charter: Had 16 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Girls basketball

Emily Allen, Cherryville: Had 10 points and five rebounds in a 58-16 win over NCSSM: Morganton.

Krista Davis, Cherryville: Had 18 points, seven steals and three rebounds.

Lyric Brown, Piedmont Community Charter: Scored a team-high 14 points in a 34-30 win over Bradford Prep.

Tuesday, Feb. 13

Boys basketball

Lance Beam, Burns: Led his team with 19 points in a 54-52 loss to East Gaston.

A.J. Adams, Crest: Led his team with 23 points and six assists in a 79-54 win over North Gaston. By virtue of the Chargers’ win, they claim the Big South 3A title.

King Rhodes, Crest: Fell just shy of a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.

D’Various Surratt, Crest: Scored 20 points.

Jayce Rowe, East Gaston: Scored 15 points in a 54-52 win over Burns.

Trent Sherrill, East Gaston: Scored 18 points, including the game-winner with 3.2 seconds left.

Jackson Fannon, East Lincoln: Scored 14 points in a 59-58 win over North Iredell.

Houston Hartsell, East Lincoln: His driving lay-up with two seconds left proved to be the game-winning shot.

Davis Hill, East Lincoln: Had 17 points.

Cooper McCraw, Highland Tech: Scored 11 points to go with five rebounds in a 66-46 win over Bessemer City.

Yoel Mussie, Highland Tech: Had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists.

Elijah Whitted, Highland Tech: Had a team-high 25 points to go with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Damontia Duff, Hunter Huss: Had 17 points, four rebounds, five steals and three assists in a 74-67 win over Forestview.

Z-Man Gladden, Hunter Huss: Scored a team-high 29 points to go with four assists, three steals and two rebounds.

Zii Phillips, Hunter Huss: Had 16 points and five rebounds.

Jurnee Lattimore, North Gaston: Scored 15 points.

Ben Heavner, North Lincoln: Scored 14 points in a 96-51 rout of West Iredell.

Kellen Karr, North Lincoln: Recorded a triple-double (20 points, 11 assist, 10 rebounds).

Ty Sanders, North Lincoln: Had 11 points, four assists and three rebounds.

Emerson Viverette, North Lincoln: Scored 13 points.

John Carmichael, Piedmont Charter: Scored 22 points to go with six steals and four rebounds in an 89-56 win over Queen’s Grant.

Bobby Erwin, Piedmont Charter: Had 11 points and five rebounds.

Xavier Wilcher, Piedmont Charter: Had 17 points and four rebounds.

Lan Farmer, Shelby: Scored 13 points in an 88-50 win over Thomas Jefferson. With the win, the Golden Lions claimed the Southern Piedmont 1A/2A title.

Drew Hollifield, Shelby: Scored a team-high 17 points.

Greyson Kines, South Point: Scored 10 points in a 79-62 loss to Kings Mountain.

Graham Williams, South Point: Recorded a double-double with 23 points and 18 rebounds.

Taelan Whitley, Stuart Cramer: Had 10 points in a 68-43 loss to Ashbrook.

Girls basketball

Nykira Arrington, Ashbrook: Scored a team-high 19 points in a 54-36 loss to Stuart Cramer.

Duraejah Hardin, Ashbrook: Scored 11 points.

Kionna Pettus, Bessemer City: Earned a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds, along with seven assists, five steals and four blocks.

Tionna Pettus, Bessemer City: Had 10 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks.

Imani Rhodes, Bessemer City: Had six points and 13 rebounds.

Kiara Anderson, East Lincoln: Recorded a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds, along with eight assists and three steals in a 72-50 win over North Iredell.

Emma Montanari, East Lincoln: Had 19 points, seven rebounds, four steals and four assists.

Kendall Manning, Forestview: Scored 11 points in the Jaguars’ 61-52 win over crosstown rival Hunter Huss.

Amani Neely, Forestview: Scored 16 points to go with five rebounds, four steals and four assists.

Blair Riley, Forestview: Earned a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) to go with two steals.

Arielle Camp, Hunter Huss: Contributed 19 points in the Huskies’ 61-52 loss to Forestview.

Farri Martin, Kings Mountain: Had 18 points in a 57-32 loss to South Point.

Genesis Cooke, Mountain Island Charter: Had nine points, nine rebounds and three assists in a 46-43 win over Pine Lake Prep.

Kayla Fudge, Mountain Island Charter: Had five points and 10 rebounds.

Tarriah Washington, Mountain Island Charter: Had nine points and three rebounds.

Hailey Hagler, North Lincoln: Recorded a double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds) to go with two assists and a block in a 63-8 win over West Iredell.

Ally Smith, North Lincoln: Scored 12 points to go with six steals and four assists.

Lyric Brown, Piedmont Charter: Scored a team-high 13 points in a 44-22 win over Corvian.

Claire Frank, South Point: Had 11 points, five rebounds and five assists in a 57-32 win over Kings Mountain.

Amya Graham, South Point: Earned a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, as well as five assists.

Oshauna Holland, Stuart Cramer: Had 12 points, five assists, four rebounds and a steal in a 54-36 win over Ashbrook. With the win, the Storm claimed the Big South 3A title, its first in program history.

Lauren Humphrey, Stuart Cramer: Had 11 points and two rebounds.

Hadley Womack, Stuart Cramer: Scored her 1,000th career point against Ashbrook. She finished with a game-high 20 points, three steals, a block and a rebound.
