South Point boys basketball coach Kody Kubbs dismissed. Here's what we know.

A year after leading South Point boys basketball to its first conference title in school history, coach Kody Kubbs is out as Red Raiders’ head coach.

Kubbs was dismissed earlier this month, along with assistant coaches Alex Davis and Blake Enoch. South Point athletic director Kent Hyde has taken over as interim coach for the rest of the season, with former Ashbrook football and basketball coach Joe Shepherd serving as his assistant.

“We realize that a change in coaches during a sports season is not easy, but we hope everyone will support Mr. Hyde and Mr. Shepherd in their efforts to guide our boys basketball teams,” said Dr. Josh Allen, principal of South Point High School. “Mr. Hyde and Mr. Shepherd have made a commitment to supporting our players and helping them focus on a strong finish to the season.”

In 13 seasons as South Point boys hoops coach, Kubbs’ 157 wins are most in school history. The Red Raiders had seven winning seasons under his watch, including the 2022-23 Big South 3A title and a single-season record 25 wins.

Few details have emerged as to why Kubbs and his assistants were relieved of duties. “Because this decision relates to personnel, we cannot share any further information because of our obligation to employee privacy,” said Dr. Josh Allen, principal of South Point High School.

Kubbs and Davis remain employed as teachers at the school. Enoch is not employed by Gaston County Schools.

A search for the Red Raiders’ next basketball coach will commence following the season, Allen said.

South Point was 10-8 at the time of Kubbs’ dismissal. The Red Raiders have played three games since Kubbs’ dismissal, earning a 20-point win Feb. 2 over Stuart Cramer before suffering losses to Hunter Huss and Crest.

“The kids are playing hard and giving us everything they have,” Hyde said following the team’s Feb. 6 loss to Huss. “They are responding as well as can be expected.”

The Red Raiders are 11-10 overall, 6-6 in Big South 3A. South Point finishes the regular season with matchups against Kings Mountain and North Gaston.
