FRIDAY PREP ROUNDUP: Ruholl, Vonderheide shine for St. Anthony girls at Robinson

Nov. 27—ROBINSON — Coming into the Robinson Lady Maroons Thanksgiving Tournament, St. Anthony head coach Aaron Rios knew his team would be in for a test right off the bat.

Mt. Carmel posed a serious threat to the Bulldogs.

The Lady Aces dominated the entire first half, leading 16-10 after the opening quarter and 34-24 at halftime.

"They got three kids that start or come off the bench that are 6-foot-2 or bigger," Rios said. "We were trying to find our way early on, defensively and offensively. Honestly, we executed really well in the first half — meaning our plays and game plan — but we couldn't make a bucket."

Senior Stacie Vonderheide and sophomore Nancy Ruholl struggled to get things going in the opening half. Vonderheide had just four points at the break; Ruholl had seven.

Both turned it on the second half, though, providing the spark St. Anthony (3-0) needed in its 62-58 win.

"We challenged them in the locker room," Rios said. "We said, 'We go the way that you guys go.' They stepped it up. Those two are our top players on our team and our top scorers and leaders. They know what to do and how to execute and they rose to the occassion today."

Ruholl finished with 37 points, seven rebounds, three steals and four assists.

Vonderheide had 10 points, six rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Addie Lauritzen also chipped in five points and five rebounds.

Ali Kollman and Addi Nuxoll each had four points and Ava Faber had two.

Faber's biggest contribution to the game, however, was on defense.

Faber drew a charge in the third quarter that eventually helped St. Anthony regain the lead.

"As a junior this year, she's been playing in our program for a long time," Rios said. "We've coached her since she was 10 or 11 years old. She knows where she needs to be on the floor and how to play and that charge was huge. It was a big momentum-changer in the game."

Following the charge, Ruholl hit a mid-range shot that put the Bulldogs in front, 40-38.

Shortly after that, St. Anthony then forced a turnover and Vonderheide converted a layup that made it 42-38.

Mt. Carmel, though, went on a 10-2 run to close the frame and take a 48-44 lead heading into the fourth.

The Bulldogs would outscore Mt. Carmel, 18-10, in the final frame to come away with the win.
