Fred Carter wants to remain immortal, if you don't mind

The New Jersey Netsneed three wins in their last 12 games to avoid becoming the worst team in NBA history. We'll all be on pins and needles to see if they can pull off this shocking upset.

In that way, like in so many others, we're just like Fred Carter.

Carter, who starred on the '72-'73 Philadelphia 76ers team the Nets are chasing, is a regular Mercury Morrishe wants to keep his legendary record.

"We weren't fortunate to win NBA titles. This gives us a different immortality," says Carter, 65. "We were never talked about until this. ... [Now] people want to talk to Fred Carter."

You mean people don't usually want to talk to Fred Carter? That's just silly. This is a guy who calls himself "the best player on the worst team in history." He was basically the Brook Lopez(notes) of that 76ers team — good, but also really silly. We should all be talking to him regularly, just so we can get cumbersome nicknames and facial hair grooming advice.

I say, right on, Fred Carter. You keep that record. You certainly earned it. In fact, I'd guess there're 13 guys in the New Jersey Nets locker room who are totally on your side.

But not Chris Quinn(notes). He wants to be immortal.
