Four Aberdeen Central, three Watertown wrestlers receive All-ESD honors

Five-time honorees Navarra Schunke of Brandon Valley and Moses Gross of Huron and four-time selections Sloan Johannsen of Watertown and Rayden Zens are among the 28 grapplers named to the 2023-24 All-Eastern South Dakota Conference wrestling team.

Schunke, Johannsen and Zens are all seniors and Gross a junior.

Junior Micah Hach and freshman Gage Lohr of Watertown and senior Ayden Gisi, junior Mason Schrempp and sophomore Ridley Waldo of Aberdeen Central also made the team. Hach, Lohr and Schrempp each repeated from 2022-23.

Rayden Zens of Aberdeen and Sloan Johannsen of Watertown squared off for the Class A boys' 126-pound championship in the South Dakota State Individual Wrestling Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 24, 2024 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls. Zens halted Johannsen's bid for a fourth state title with a 5-2 win. Johannsen finished his career with 181-3 record. All three losses came to Zens.

Other repeat selections are seniors Trevon Oehme of Brandon Valley, Nolan Miles of Brookings, Logan O'Connor Harrisburg and Chance Carda and Trey Lewis and Tristan Spencer of Pierre and sophomore Alex Oedekoven of Pierre.

Rounding out the squad are freshman Brendon Oehme and Beckett Rehorst and sophomore Elijah Schunke of Brandon Valley; senior Tate Helmbolt and junior Gabe Stern of Brookings; senior Soren Aadland, sophomore Tayge Privett and eighth-grader Tristan Stoeser of Harrisburg; freshman Rocky Clark of Mitchell; and seniors Lucas Chamberlin and Jaxon Ducherneaux and junior Elijah Boutchee of Pierre.

Pierre and Aberdeen Central shared the league's dual championship with 7-1 records.

All-Northeast Conference Girls Basketball

Player of the Year Krista Langager of Sisseton spearheads the 2024 All-Northeast Conference girls basketball team.

Langager is a repeat first-team selection along with senior teammate Hannah Leverson and Hamlin sophomore Addison Neuendorf. Leverson is a three-time first-team honoree and Neuendorf a three-time all-league performers.

Senior Katie Rozell of Redfield and junior Ava Hanson of Aberdeen Roncalli round out the first team. Hanson made the second team and Rozell the third team a year ago.

Second-team honorees are seniors Emmalee Nielsen of Sisseton, Marissa Bawdon of Hamlin and Josie Andersen of Deuel and juniors Isabella Anderson of Milbank and Maddie Huber of Roncalli. Nielsen and Anderson (a three-time honoree) are repeat second team selections and Andersen made the third team a year ago.

The All-NEC third team includes senior Sydney Leicht of Groton Area and juniors Sterling Brassfield of Britton-Hecla, Teyha Vig of Clark-Willow Lake, Tyra Berry of Milbank and Erin Sannes of Webster Area. Leicht made the second team last winter.

All-Big Dakota Conference Girls Basketball

Seven players are repeat honorees on the 2024 All-Big Dakota Conference girls basketball.

Repeat selections are Morgan Kolda of Miller, Kinsey Evans and Jayna Handel of Chamberlain, Mari Richards of McLaughlin, Charley Henderson of Mobridge-Pollock and Keelie Kull and Kylie Sachtjen of Winner.

Others honored include Ronessa Sazue of Crow Creek, Blake Thompson of McLaughlin, Tegan Konold of Mobridge-Pollock, Payton LeRoy of Todd County and Ava Craven of Winner. Sazue received honorable mention last winter.

Honorable mention: Tiana Johnson and Mariah Buffalo-Halfred of Cheynne-Eagle Butte; Katy Kemnitz, Heidi Olson and Faith Heil of Mobridge-Pollock; Mattie Duffy and Cadence Hand of Stanley County; Leslee Makes Room for Them of Todd County; Paige Werdel, Gracen Werdel and Aleah Schlechter of Miller; and Karlee Brozik and Cici Watson of Winner. Johnson, Duffy and Makes Room for Them also received honorable mention last winter.

All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Wrestling

ABERDEEN — Nothern State University wrestlers Wyatt Turnquist and Seth Brossard each have been named to the 2023-24 All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestling team for college.

Tunquist, a redshirt junior from Winner, wrestled at 149 pounds this winter. Brossard, a graduate senior from Wanamingo (Minn.), wrestled at 174.
