Former Packers great Carr dead at 71

Former Green Bay Packers linebacker Fred Carr passed away Monday at the age of 71.

His daughter, Karsetta Carr, said he had been suffering from dementia and prostate cancer.

A member of the Green Bay Hall of Fame, Carr was drafted fifth overall in 1968. He played his entire nine-year career with Green Bay, terrorizing offenses with uncanny speed for a 6-foot-5, 250-pound linebacker.

A product of Phoenix Union High School in south Phoenix, the three-sport prep star first played college ball at Phoenix College, where he won a national championship, before moving on to play football and basketball at University of Texas El-Paso.

His legacy in south Phoenix continued after his playing days.

His nephews Brian and Terry Carr became local stars before moving on to college basketball (Brian played at UConn) and football (Terry played at Tennessee before joining the NFL).

Craig Liston, his former quarterback at Phoenix College, says Carr remained a local legend.

"If you said, 'Freddie,' everyone knew who you were talking about," Liston told AZcentral.com. "Everyone knew Freddie Carr. He was always caring. He was the life of the party. Everybody wanted to be around Freddie. His personality was bigger than himself."

Funeral services will be held March 3.
