Former Jaguars QB Chad Henne retires after 15 seasons
Chad Henne is going out a Super Bowl champion, he revealed shortly after the Kansas City Chiefs won the Lombardi Trophy on Sunday night.
The veteran quarterback, who spent the last five seasons backing up Patrick Mahomes in Kansas City, announced his decision to retire shortly after the Chiefs’ 38-35 win against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Henne, 37, began his career as the Miami Dolphins’ second-round pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. After starting 31 games in four seasons with the team, Henne joined the Jaguars as a free agent in 2012.
While the Jaguars intended for him to be the backup for 2011 first-round pick Blaine Gabbert, it didn’t take long for Henne to take the reins.
After starting six games in his first season with the Jaguars, Henne was the starter for all but three games in 2013. The following season, he was supplanted by first-round pick Blake Bortles, and Henne watched from the sideline for three more years before leaving as a free agent in 2018.
This season, he played the role of spoiler for Jacksonville. When Mahomes suffered an ankle injury in a Divisional Round matchup between the Jaguars and Chiefs, Henne was briefly called into action. The veteran led Kansas City on a 98-yard touchdown drive, completing five of his seven passes, including a one-yard touchdown pass to Travis Kelce.
Henne threw 27 touchdowns and 26 interceptions during his time with the Jaguars and finished his NFL career with 60 touchdowns and 63 interceptions.
