Football: Tekonsha falls to Camden, Bronson loses at Reading

TEKONSHA – The Tekonsha Indians fell to Camden Frontier Friday night in 8-player football, dropping the conference matchup by the score of 50-20.

Camden raced out to a 44-0 lead before Tekonsha could find the scoreboard early in the fourth quarter. Tekonsha showed now quit after finally getting into the endzone, exploding for 20 fourth quarter points, although it just was not enough as Camden took the 50-20 win.

Camden Frontier used the arm of quarterback Logan Leggett to do much of its early damage through the air. Leggett connected on five touchdown passes, three to wide out Ethan Wickham, as Camden raced out to the early lead.

Camden scored on a 7-yard pass from Leggett to Conroy to kick off the scoring, followed by a 1-yard run by Leggett. After a 21-yard touchdown run by Miller it was the Leggett air show, connecting on touchdown passes of 33-yards, 12-yards, and 79-yards to Wickham, and on a 21-yard pass to Henning.

With Camden leading 44-0 early in the fourth quarter Tekonsha finally found its way into the endzone as Anthony “AC” Carter scored on a 26-yard touchdown run, closing the score to 44-6. After a defensive stop for the Indians, it was Emmitt Blashfield finding Carter through the air, scoring on a 61-yard touchdown pass, closing the score to 44-12 with 6:23 left in the game.

Tekonsha’s final score came on the defensive side of the ball as linebacker Ben Mead recovered a Camden Frontier fumble in the endzone for a touchdown, closing the score to 44-20 with 3:51 left in the game.

Camden Frontier scored one last time as Leggett used his legs this time, scoring on a 15-yard touchdown run, his seventh touchdown of the night. With the touchdown the teams found the final score of 50-20.

Emmitt Blashfield led the Tekonsha offensive effort, completing 7 of 20 passes for 144 yards and one score while adding 13 carries for 63 yards.

Anthony Carter had a big day, rushing the ball eight times for 64 yards and a touchdown while adding 5 catches for 138 yards and one score. On defense Carter added eight total tackles with one interception.

Ben Mead led the Tekonsha defensive effort, notching 16 total tackles, including two for a loss, with a fumble recovery. Also adding to the Tekonsha defense was Emmitt Blashfield with seven tackles, three for a loss and Marco Sanchez with eight tackles.

With the loss Tekonsha falls to 1-3 overall. The Indians will next see action Friday when they host Adrian Lenawee Christian for their annual Homecoming.

▸Bronson falls to Reading (By Joe Flaherty/Hillsdale Daily News): Bronson headed to Reading coming off a 34-8 statement win against Quincy in Week 3. Quincy pulled off the win at Reading in Week 2. All signs pointed to another tough matchup at home for the Rangers, but coach Rick Bailey and Reading not only pulled off an upset but won in convincing fashion over the now 2-2 Vikings.

The 36-12 victory is the first win for the Rangers this season, and if they are able to play similar football down the stretch, it will be the first of several.

It all starts and ends with senior athlete Tayshawn Bester. Bester had his breakout game of 2023, scoring three times for the Rangers on Friday night. Bester broke away for an 80-yard punt return touchdown. He also had two 2-point conversions. He ran for 77 yards on 10 carries. On defense, Bester had 11 tackles and one interception.

Junior Lukas Strine has been an anchor at running back and linebacker for the Rangers this season. He had 68 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the night. He added one 2-point conversion to his stat sheet. On defense, he led the team with 14 tackles.

Other standout defensive players included Stephen Anderson with a fumble recovery, Conner Rudy with four tackles-for-loss and Skyler Charters with five tackles.

QB Brady Kling completed three passes for 60 yards.

Individual stats for Bronson were not made available.

With the loss Bronson falls to 2-2 and will next see action Friday when it hosts Union City.
