Even 'Jeopardy!' is taking shots at Kevin Durant for joining the Warriors

The Golden State Warriors are one win away from an NBA title, and if they get that win — if they don’t blow a 3-1 lead this time around — the driving force behind their return to the top of the basketball world will have been Kevin Durant. If the Warriors close out the series Monday night, Durant will likely be the Finals MVP.

He has also been the subject of scorn from hoops fans ever since July of last year, when he left his former team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, to join the Warriors. Before blowing their own 3-1 lead in the Finals, the Warriors had come back from 3-1 down to beat the Thunder in the conference finals. Rather than reload to try to take down the Warriors, Durant bolted and joined the evil empire, leading many to label him spineless or cowardly.

The best types or Durant criticism, however, are the more subtle digs. And especially the more subtle digs made by mainstream TV shows. And especially when those TV shows air on the same night as Game 5 of the NBA Finals, when Durant could lift his first Larry O’Brien Trophy.

That’s exactly what Jeopardy! did on Monday night:

One contestant, Tucker, opted for the category “Sporting Life” for $600, and he was rewarded for what was basically a freebie for anybody who is even remotely interested in sports. But the best part was the way the clue was worded. “This Thunder stud didn’t beat ‘em, he joined ‘em.”

Given the scheduling of the program on the same night as Game 5, this is great, timely content.
