Canutillo baseball player Dante Gomez wins Jarritos Athlete of the Week award

Dante Gomez of the Canutillo baseball baseball team is this week's Jarritos High School Athlete of the Week. Gomez pitched seven innings, allowed four hits and had eight strikeouts for Canutillo against Abilene Wylie in area round of baseball playoffs.

Gomez earned 41.35 percent of the vote. The Franklin mixed doubles team od Karina Lee and Aiden Fraire were second with 24.42 percent of the vote.

The El Paso Times will be honoring high school athletes this year on a weekly basis that you, the readers, help determine. We will be taking weekly nominations and will release a list of finalists for the Jarritos High School Athlete of the Week each Tuesday.

Students in all varsity sports are eligible to be nominated. The poll will close at 2 p.m. Thursday and the winners will be announced Friday each week.

Here are this week's nominees:

• Daniela Ocaranza, El Paso High Tennis. She qualified for state tennis tournament in Class 5A singles.

• Maximus Martin, El Paso High tennis. He qualified for state tennis tournament in Class 5A singles.

• Makenzie Baptist, Coronado High tennis. She qualified for the state tennis tournament in Class 6A singles.

• Aiden Fraire and Karina Lee, Franklin High tennis. They qualified for state tennis tournament in Class 6A mixed doubles.

• Dante Gomez, Canutillo baseball. Pitched seven innings, allowed four hits and had eight strikeouts for Canutillo against Abilene Wylie in area round of baseball playoffs.

• Yahel Quintana, El Paso Leadership Academy baseball. Allowed one hit and struck out 15 in win against IDEA South Flores in Charter School playoffs.

• Manuel Escobedo, El Paso Leadership Academy baseball. Hit a three-run homer in win against IDEA South Flores in Charter School playoffs.
