Dusty May reportedly gets first Michigan basketball staff hire

It has been more than a week since Dusty May was introduced as the 18th head coach in Michigan basketball history, yet it’s been slow-going when it’s come to building his staff.

But on Tuesday we learned about what looks to be his first assistant coach hire, though it’s not from his former staff at Florida Atlantic as many wold have expected.

According to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander, May is close to hiring Mike Boynton Jr., the former Oklahoma State head coach, as an assistant for the maize and blue. It’s not yet a done deal, but given his coaching acumen, it would be a big hire for May and the Wolverines.

Boynton faced Michigan once before during his Oklahoma State tenure, albeit the year before he became a head coach. The Cowboys lost to the Wolverines in 2017 when they matched up in the NCAA Tournament.

Before Oklahoma State, Boynton was an assistant at Coastal Carolina, Wofford, his alma mater South Carolina and Stephen F. Austin.

He’s 119-109 as a head coach.
