Durfee swim and dive teams sweep Bishop Stang: Top performers for Jan 15-20

FALL RIVER — It was a clean sweep by the Durfee swim and dive teams on Saturday.

The Hilltoppers boys improved to 5-3 after beating Bishop Stang, 102-74. Michael Harrington was a double winner in the 200 (2:15.60) and 500 free events (6:13.22). Other winners include Micah Ross (diving; 153.85), William Rumsey (100 free; 1:01.92) and Jack Fitzgerald (100 backstroke; 1:18.99). Fitzgerald and Rumsey joined Forrest Malo and Logan Vandenburgh to win the 200 free relay (1:53.27). Seth Vandenburgh, Donovan Chhem, and Timothy Archambault all had great performances today.

Durfee 93, Bishop Stang 87

The Lady Hilltoppers received sensational performances in their win against Bishop Stang. Winners include Rachael Silva (diving; 235.35), Claire Bjerre (500 free; 7:15.09) and Leah Rodriguez (100 backstroke; 1:29.04). Casey Carvalho qualified for the MIAA D1 dive championship. Bruna Lobo, Abigail Carrerio, Kasey Juarez, Abigail Saunders and Gillian Tiburtino picked up important points.

Boys Basketball

Durfee 78, Bridgewater 64

The Hilltoppers opened up a close game late and defeated league opponent Bridgewater-Raynham on the road, 78-64. Jeyden Espinal led Durfee (7-5) with a team-high 20 points. Avonte Lamore had 19 points and Jahmier Stephenson finished with 16 points. Other contributors for the Hilltoppers were Davontae Stewart (10 points), Eric Lucas (seven points) and Ben Sherry (six points).

Old Rochester 69, Case 58

Landon Cayton netted a team-high 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out six assists in Old Rochester's win. Cayden Gonsalves chipped in with 18 points and Aiden Parent finished with 14 points for Case (7-4, 4-3 in SCC).

Somerset Berkley 53, Dighton Rehoboth 28

MacKenzie Pires scored a season-high 21 points and had three steals in the Raiders' win over league opponent Dighton-Rehoboth. Mia Gentile had 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals while Brooke Fisher finished with 12 points, four rebounds and three assists for SBR (5-5; 4-3 in SCC).

Bridgewater-Raynham 35, Durfee 33

Julia Hargraves scored a team-high 14 points for the Hilltoppers in Bridgewater-Raynham's win. Maggie O’Connell also finished in double figures with 11 points for Durfee (5-6).

Old Rochester 39, Case 33

Emma Plante netted 11 points for the Cardinals in Old Rochester's home win. Liberty Gazaille had eight points and Madilyn Botelho scored five points for Case (7-5). Brooke Perron had a clutch 3-pointer to bring it 33-30 with less than a minute to go.

Boys Swimming

Old Rochester 103, Durfee 74

The Hilltoppers dropped a home meet to Old Rochester. The sole first-place finish for Durfee (4-3) came from the diving event with Seth Vandenburgh obtaining a season-high 192.90 points. Michael Harrington (500 free) and Reed White (100 breaststroke) each had personal-best times. Will Rumsey, Anthony Sweat, and Forrest Malo swam well.

Old Rochester 90, Durfee 83

Rachael Silva (diving; 256.20) and Abigail Saunders (50 freestyle; 30.23) each finished in first place for the Hilltoppers in Old Rochester's victory. Avery Antunes (100 fly), Kasey Juarez (500 free) and Paitynn Botelho (500 free) each had personal-best times for Durfee (2-5). Casey Carvalho, Claire Bjerre, Regan Gibney, and Sarah Raposa all improved their season high scores. Leah Rodriguez and Reagan Melo also had strong performances.

Boys basketball

Westport 62, Holbrook 61

Owen Boudria sank a free throw with .5 second remaining to lift the Wildcats to an exciting road win at Holbrook High School. Boudria finished with a game-high 37 points on 10-for-13 from the field and 14-of-16 from the charity stripe for Westport (4-6). Anthony Raposa and Max Gallant each played great defense.

Somerset Berkley 75, Dighton-Rehoboth 55

Finn Bjork scored 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the Raiders' road win against Dighton-Rehoboth. Colten Pacheco added 14 points and Dom Taylor chipped in with 13 points. Mason Medeiros finished with 11 points for SBR (7-1).

Diman 62, Tri-County 52

Anthony DeJesus led the Bengals with a team-high 23 points in their win over Tri-County. Sam Perry chipped in with 15 points and Aidan Bigelow added nine points. Sakai Silver had eight assists for Diman (3-4-1). Jack Librera, Alex DeCoste, Kaiden Dias and Jace Piexoto provided firepower off the bench.

Atlantis Charter 55, St. John Paul II 45

Mickey Pimentel scored a team-high 19 points in a come from behind win on the road against St. John Paul II. DJ Adediran added 13 points and Nate Benivedes finished in double figures with 11. Marv Antoine (seven), Devon Paradise, Genald George and Izzy Aponte (four) had a solid game for Atlantis Charter (5-5).

Westport 48, Holbrook 14

Skylar Rezendes netted a game-high 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and an assist to help the Wildcats beat Holbrook. Korynne Holden had 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and five steals. Julia George dished out 11 assists, collected five steals and five rebounds. Other contributors for Westport (8-1) were Meghan Molloy (six), Sarah Perry (five) and Jenna Egbe (four).

Diman 38, Tri-County 27

Evey Fernandes netted a game-high 16 points for the Bengals in a home win against Tri-County. Lizzy Kinnane, Savanna Rodrigues and Cindy Bui each finished with six points (3-3, 2-0 Mayflower Large).

Boys Indoor Track

The Diman boys competed at the Mayflower Invitational at Wheaton, competing in non-traditional events against all Mayflower teams along with Bishop Feehan and Bishop Stang. Asafe Penha took first place in the 60 dash (7.57) and Phoenix Bennett placed third overall in the 400 (56.08). Cashton Richard took fifth place in the 60 hurdles (9.90) and fourth in the high jump (5'3). Other top performers were Andrew Gesner (triple jump; 36'5"), Steve Guzman (shot put; 34'1") and Paul Hart (shot put; 33'10"). Ben Bannister, Macauley Crossman, Izayah Summers, and Austin Fonseca took fourth place in the 4x800.

Girls Indoor Track

Inez Medeiros took first place in the 60 dash (8.41) and first place in the 200 (27.56) for the Diman girls in the Mayflower Invitational at Wheaton College. Emma Foley placed first in the triple jump (35'4") while Grace Flattery finished second in the high jump (4'11), the 200 (28.46) and fifth in the 60 hurdles (11.09). Other top five performers were Alexah Pedder (1500; 5:47), Hannah King (shot put; 26'4"), Katie Miranda (shot put; 26'0"), Angela Njoroge (400; 1:11), Joleah Rivera (200; 30.22) and Mary Anne Lopes (60 dash; 9.13). The 4x800 team of Lylah Thibeault, Nicole Mota, Isabelle Chekares and Pedder took first place (11:33).

Somerset Berkley 2, Seekonk/Dighton-Rehoboth 0

Aaron Preston and Mason Sullivan (empty net) each collected goals for the Raiders (7-1-1; 6-0 in SCC) in their win against Seekonk/Dighton-Rehoboth. Braydon Pimental picked up an assist in the win. Brandon Silva stopped 20 shots on net.

Diman/Durfee/Westport 6, Blue Hills 2

Ryan Sandford, Bryce Medeiros (assist), Evan Camara, Landen Frietas (assist), Kane Aguiar (assist) and Jacob Almeida (assist) each scored goals in the Bengals win over Blue Hills. Jacoby Brouliard, Owen Vernon and RJ Leach also added assists for Diman (8-3-1; 5-1 Mayflower)

Boys Basketball

West Bridgewater 60, Case 42

Landon Cayton had a team-high 18 points for the Cardinals (7-3, 4-2 in SCC) in West Bridgewater's win. The loss snapped Case's five-game winning streak.

Girls Basketball

Case 54, West Bridgewater 24

The Cardinals picked up their third straight win, beating West Bridgewater on the road. Emma Plante led Case (7-4; 3-3 in SCC) with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Liberty Gazaille chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds. Kylie Cabral finished with 12 points and two steals.

Wrestling

Brockton 69, Durfee 11

Seth Chuon and Riley Jacob secured wins for the Hilltoppers in Brockton's victory. Durfee heads to Marshfield on Saturday for a super quad dual meet

Gymnastics

Somerset Berkley/Case/Seekonk 125.6, Carver/MIddleboro 123.7

The Raiders co-op gymnastics team improved to 2-1 on the season after beating Carver/Middleboro. Ava Silva and Lauren Reynolds each recorded a 8.55 on vault. Brooke Leahy had a 8.0 and Bianca Sacal finished with a 7.7 on bars. Lauren Reynolds (8.3) and Emily Levine (7.9) scored well on beam. Reynolds chipped in with an 8.4 and Leahy ended with an 8.2 on floor exercise.

Tuesday

Boys Basketball

Avonte Lamore led a balanced scoring attack for the Hilltoppers with a team-high 19 points in Durfee's home win against New Bedford. Ben Sherry chipped in with 15 points and Jahmier Stephenson added 14 points. Other player who hit the scoring sheet for Durfee (6-5) were Eric Lucas (10), Davontae Stewart (eight) and Jeyden Espinal (eight).

Bourne 77, Somerset Berkley 65

The Raiders dropped their first game of the season at home against league opponent Bourne. Finn Bjork led SBR (6-1; 5-1 in South Coast Conference) with a team-high 20 points. Brendan McDonald finished with 17 points.

Calvary Chapel 67, Atlantis Charter 64, OT

Nate Benivedes had a team-high 15 points for the Tritons in Calvary Chapel's win in overtime. DJ Adediran scored 14 points and Mickey Pinentel collected 13 points. Marv Antoine also finished in double figures with 12 points. Other scorers for Atlantis Charter (4-5) were Genald George (six), Izzy Aponte (two) and Devon Paradise (two). Djouby Antoine played solid defense.

Girls Basketball

Durfee 47, New Bedford 39

The Hilltoppers snapped a five-game losing skid with a road win against New Bedford. Maggie O’Connell and Avery Layne each had a team-high 12 points. Other scorers for Durfee (5-5) were Maddie Hargraves (eight), Jadah Johnson-Scott (eight) and Julia Hargraves (seven).

Bourne 75, Somerset Berkley 41

The Raiders dropped their game against unbeaten Bourne on the road. Mia Gentile led SBR (4-5) with a team-high 17 points. Makenzie Pires finished with16 points and Anya Kanalski ended with six points.

Calvary Chapel 45, Atlantis Charter 25

Despite an outstanding defense game from Julia Ribon, the Tritons lost at home to Calvary Chapel. Ribon pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Luna Campos and Shelly Melecio Trinidad also played a solid game for Atlantis Charter (0-6).

Westport 40, Southeastern 36

Korynne Holden scored a team-high 17 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists in the Wildcats win over Southeastern. Sarah Perry had 13 points, pulled down 12 rebounds and collected three assists. Other scorers for Westport (7-1) include Skylar Rezendes (six), Julia George (two) and Jenna Egbe (two).
