Dolphins GM Chris Grier on Tua Tagovailoa contract and if they would consider QB with 21st pick

MIAMI GARDENS — The Dolphins are planning to extend the contract of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

"We're very happy with Tua," Dolphins general manager Chris Grier said Tuesday.

The Dolphins are not planning to draft a quarterback in the first round of the NFL draft next week.

"That's not something I'm looking at, the first round," Grier said. "That's not something we've talked about."

So, no, don't place Washington lefty Michael Penix, Jr. in your Dolphins mock draft.

It is far more likely the Dolphins will add an offensive tackle, guard or edge rusher.

"Best available," Grier said, meaning, best available player.

It's always possible Miami adds a quarterback later in the draft, Grier indicated.

Grier considers the talks with Tua's agency to have been going well.

"When it happens, it happens," Grier said. "We've had good communication. I'll leave those between his representation and the organization. But it's been good."

Tua's agents have a good understanding of the intensity of pre-draft focus, and so the two sides will reconvene after the draft.

"We'll keep working toward this," said Grier, meaning a long-term deal that probably lands somewhere around $50 million a season.

The Dolphins are crediting Tua with his choice to hire a personal quarterback coach and to get into what is clearly tip-top shape.

Grier and coach Mike McDaniel believe Tua, 26, has not yet reached his ceiling.

"He wants to be great," Grier said. "He's trying to do everything he can to be great. This is his next evolution. As Mike has told you guys, we feel there is a whole other step he can take."
