Diamondbacks 10, Padres 9 (10 innings)
PHOENIX -- Aaron Hill singled home Adam Eaton with the winning run in the 10th inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the San Diego Padres 10-9 Tuesday for their major-league-high 15th extra-inning victory.
Gerardo Parra homered and drove in a career-high five runs for Arizona.
Eaton and Paul Goldschmidt singled to left field to open the 10th off Dale Thayer (2-4), and Eaton moved to third on Martin Prado's fly to right-center field. After Goldschmidt took second on defensive indifference, the Padres went to a five-man infield against Hill, who lined a ball over the left fielder's head.
The D-backs have a big-league-high 28 one-run victories and 38 comeback victories.
Heath Bell (5-2) pitched a 1-2-3 10th, and the D-backs (68-63) won for the third time in four games.
San Diego tied it with a two-run rally in the ninth off Arizona closer Brad Ziegler. Yonder Alonso singled to open the inning, and Jesus Guzman walked. Nick Hundley singled to left to drive in a run, and Ronny Cedeno beat out a bunt toward first base to tie the game at 9.
Arizona, which was charged with two blown saves in the game, leads the majors with 26.
Parra hit a three-run home in the second and a two-run single in the fifth as Arizona took a 6-3 lead. The advantage grew to 7-3 when Prado walked with the bases loaded in the sixth.
San Diego tied the game with four runs off three relievers in the eighth inning. Cedeno singled in two runs, and Mark Kotsay and Jedd Gyorko added run-scoring singles.
Prado, who had three RBIs, hit a two-run double into the left-field corner to give the D-backs a 9-7 lead in the eighth inning. He leads the major leagues with 38 hits in August, and he leads the NL with 30 RBIs this month.
Paul Goldschmidt doubled in a run in the fifth inning to improve his RBI total to an NL-high 104. He also walked three times.
Will Venable had three hits and an RBI and scored a run for the Padres (59-73), who have lost five of their last eight. Venable has 37 hits in August.
The D-backs spoiled the return of Ian Kennedy, who was their Opening Day starter the last three seasons before being dealt to the Padres at the July 31 trade deadline. Kennedy gave up six runs on six hits and five walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Arizona left-hander David Holmberg had a rocky start in his major league debut, giving up hits to the first four batters he faced in a three-run first inning. Gyorko and Headley had RBI singles, and Nick Hundley drove in the third run with a sacrifice fly.
Parra's homer, after a single by Martin Prado and a walk to Aaron Hill, tied the game at 3 in the second inning.
Eaton tripled with one out in the fifth and scored on Goldschmidt's ground-rule double to right field. Parra's bases-loaded single made it 6-3 after Kennedy walked Prado and hit Hill. Parra's ball one-hopped the center field fence, but Hill was able to get only as far as second after tagging up on the play, leaving Parra at first.
Holmberg allowed three runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings.
NOTES: Arizona designated OF Jason Kubel for assignment to make room on the roster for Holmberg, whose contract was purchased from Double-A Mobile earlier Tuesday. Kubel, who was hitting .220 with five homers and 32 RBIs in 241 at-bats, had nine hits in his last 75 at-bats. The D-backs have 10 days to waive, trade or release Kubel. ... San Diego announced that LHP Robbie Erlin will be recalled from Triple-A Tucson to start the final game of the series Wednesday. The Padres will make a corresponding roster move Wednesday.
