Game notes: The Yankees and Tigers faced off just a few days ago at Comerica Park for a four-game set and after a quick series in between, the Tigers now travel to the Big Apple for a rematch.

The Yanks got the best of the Tigers last time; the Tigers won the series finale, 4-3, to avoid a sweep but oddly enough, both teams seem to have found something during the four games. After ripping off three wins in four games, the Yankees traveled to Houston and swept the Astros, one of the best teams in baseball. Meanwhile, the Tigers traveled to Chicago and put together a sweep against the White Sox. In all likelihood, it's too late for both of these teams to make any type of playoff push, but surely both squads would love some late-season momentum to carry them into the offseason.

TIGERS NEWSLETTER: 5 milestones within reach over the final 25 games

Because of the two series being so close, Yankees veteran Gerrit Cole will face the Tigers for his second straight start. Cole was sharp in that appearance, allowing just four hits and two earned runs in six innings. Despite his team's disappointing play, Cole is having one of his best seasons with the Yankees. Pretty much however you break down Cole's splits, he's been impressive. It'll be another tough challenge for the Tigers, especially with outfielder Riley Greene sidelined with an arm injury that could cost him the rest of the season.

The Tigers' rotation has been in flux since trading Michael Lorenzen to the Philadelphia Phillies, while trying to navigate the proper rest needed for Tarik Skubal and some of their other young pitchers. Right-hander Alex Faedo has been shifted to a bullpen role, but now will start the series opener Tuesday evening.
