Game notes: Familiarity breeds contempt, as they say, and although “contempt” is probably a bit strong to describe the Tigers’ feelings toward Cal Quantrill, they’re certainly familiar with him, and have been stymied all too often by his sinker/cutter mix, though. Quantrill has struck out 31 Tigers in 135 plate appearances, though the ratio is declining; after picking up 19 strikeouts in 14⅓ innings in 2021, he had just 11 in 16 innings last season, as his ERA against Detroit jumped from 3.14 in 2021 to 3.94 last year.

Tigers catcher Eric Haase hits an RBI double off Guardians pitcher Aaron Civale in the fourth inning on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2022, at Comerica Park.

No Tiger exemplifies this so much as catcher Eric Haase; he went 0-for-6 with three strikeouts in his first six plate appearances vs. Quantrill in 2020-22 before finally homering off him on July 5 last year. In his past seven plate appearances (including the homer) vs. Quantrill, Haase is 3-for-6 with two singles, two strikeouts and a walk. Another Tiger with some moderate success off the second-generation MLB’er — his dad, Paul, pitched for seven teams over 14 seasons, including finishing his career with the Marlins in 2005 — is Miguel Cabrera (who was actually teammates with Paul in 2005). Cabrera, who’s not likely to play Wednesday after starting Game 1 Tuesday on his 40th birthday, is 7-for-12 in his career against Cal Quantrill — all singles. (Miggy can’t claim hits off both father and son, unfortunately; he went 0-for-1 against Paul.)

On the flip side, this might be the day Cleveland slugger Jose Ramirez snaps out of his funk. He entered Tuesday with five strikeouts this season and finished it with five more, which is, uh ... a lot, even for two games. But he has a stellar track record against the Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: 7-for-19 with three doubles, a triple, two strikeouts, a walk and five RBIs. Meanwhile, the rest of the Guardians' roster has three hits combined off Turnbull.

After today’s matinee, the Tigers have Thursday off to travel to Baltimore for their three-game set vs. the Orioles beginning Friday. The Guardians, meanwhile — like the San Francisco Giants before them — depart Detroit for a three-game set against Miami, though they’ll be at home for the series beginning Friday.
