CATCHING UP WITH OLD FRIENDS: Here's how 29 ex-Tigers are faring with their new teams

SATURDAY'S VICTORY: Tigers rally from early hole, beat Cardinals 6-5 (10) for 5th straight win

Game notes: If the name “Steven Matz” sounds vaguely familiar, it’s because the now-31-year-old lefty etched his place in history with an 84.4 mph changeup in the sixth inning on Aug. 22, 2021. The result of that pitch traveled 400 feet to right-center, finally landing in the stands at Toronto’s Rogers Centre for Miguel Cabrera’s 500th career home run. Matz was always a bit homer-prone, allowing 25 in 2018 and 27 in 2019 and giving up 1.49 homers per nine innings over his first six seasons. But since Miggy’s homer, he has cut down on the homers — just 1.37 allowed per nine innings — at the expense of his ERA, which is at 4.97 over 117⅔ innings.

Cabrera isn’t the only Tiger with a history against Matz: Javier Báez has a homer and four singles in nine at-bats vs. Matz, and Jonathan Schoop is 2-for-7 in his career with a homer and a walk.

Alex Faedo will be making his first big-league start since July 11, 2022. He has been mostly effective in five stints with Triple-A Toledo and is coming off a four-inning hitless, scoreless start Monday against Syracuse in which he struck out five and walked one. Expect the bullpen to get some work again, however, as Faedo has been limited to under 60 pitches in four of his five starts this year.

After the series finale, the Tigers zip north to Cleveland for a three-game set against the Guardians — it’s just their second series against an AL Central team this season, after taking two of three from the Guardians in Detroit on April 18-19. The Cards, meanwhile, head to Chicago to face their hated rivals, the Cubs, for three games on Monday-Wednesday.
