Detroit Lions re-sign backup quarterback Nate Sudfeld

The Detroit Lions are bringing back a familiar face for veteran insurance at the quarterback spot.

The Lions announced they re-signed quarterback Nate Sudfeld on Thursday.

Sudfeld appeared in two games as a backup for the Lions in 2022. He missed all of last season with a torn ACL he suffered in the preseason, but was around the team for rehab late in the year and in the playoffs.

The Lions are actively trying to re-sign starting quarterback Jared Goff to a contract extension and plan to keep Hendon Hooker, a third-round pick last year, as their backup this fall.

Goff is coming off one of the best seasons of his career when he completed 67.3% of his passes and finished second in the league in passing (4,575 yards) while leading the Lions to their first division championship in 30 years. Hooker worked primarily on the scout team last year after returning from the torn ACL he suffered in college. He has never taken an NFL snap in the preseason or regular season.

Sudfeld, 30, should compete for a roster spot as the third quarterback on the 53-man roster or practice squad.
