Detroit Lions fans overjoyed by Jared Goff's massive contract: 'Definitely deserves it'

The Detroit Lions secured their third long-term extension for a key offensive player this offseason with the biggest contract yet.

Quarterback Jared Goff received a four-year, $212 million contract extension, making him the highest-paid Lion ever. Goff's deal makes him the second-highest-paid player across the NFL, at $53 million a year, behind just Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals at $55 million. ESPN first reported the deal.

Goff's deal comes weeks after general manager Brad Holmes also handed out extensions to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and right tackle Penei Sewell, also putting them at the top of their position groups in salary (though St. Brown was later passed by Philadelphia's A.J. Brown). Detroit spent over $230 million on the first wave of extensions and Goff's new deal brings that number north of $440 million spent in the last month.

Detroit locked down the offensive core that helped the team win the division and reach the NFC championship game for the first time in over three decades. Goff finished second in the NFL with 4,575 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 67.3% of his passes in Detroit's 12-5 season. He threw for at least 270 yards and a touchdown in all three playoff games while not committing a turnover as he led the Lions to the doorstep of the Super Bowl.

Goff became a cult hero during the playoff run in the city of Detroit. His name was chanted frequently during the playoffs with former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford in town with the Rams, and he delivered the win to snap the franchise's playoff drought. The chanting hasn't stopped, sticking around as a symbol of the Lions' newfound success.

The whopping new deal was announced late afternoon Monday, dropping like a shockwave at the end of the work day. There was some sticker shock with the price tag, as it could hinder team building in the future, but most Lions fans were happy for Goff, a player who has been through a lot in his career, cashing in on a big payday after finding a place where he could grow and prove he can be a top quarterback.

ESPN analyst and former Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky found out the news live on broadcast, and showed true excitement for Goff securing the bag.
