Who is the Gainesville-area's Athlete of the Week winner for January 15-21?

The votes are in for the Sun's Athlete of the Week, and with the soccer season entering postseason play, our winner comes from the pitch.

Williston Girls' Soccer Yarielis Mujica took home the Athlete of the Week for January 15-21. The junior received just over 4,200 votes and 35 percent of the vote, more than 1,400 votes and 12 percent than second-place finisher Cornelius White (Gainesville Boys Basketball).

Mujica scored eight goals for the Red Devils in a 10-2 win over Lafayette last Friday. Her 35 goals rank 28th nationally and 10th in Florida, according to Maxpreps.

The Red Devils won their first playoff game 8-0 over Branford Thursday night and will now host Keystone Heights in the semifinals of the Class 3A-District 4 postseason.

During the season, a poll launches each Monday at https://www.gainesville.com/sports/high-school/ to determine the Athlete of the Week from the previous week's top performances. We accept nominations to nram@gannett.com through each Sunday afternoon.
