Could Trevor Lawrence skip 2021 NFL Draft, return for senior season?

If you’re a New York Jets fan, perhaps the only thing getting you through a winless season so far is the possibility of landing the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

With that selection, the Jets would have the opportunity to select one of the most highly regarded quarterback prospects in recent memory, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence.

But will Lawrence actually make the early leap to the NFL after this year, or could he return for his senior season?

After making comments earlier this year that he was planning to leave Clemson after the 2020 season, Lawrence appeared to walk back on that stance this week (via Fox Carolina’s Aaron Cheslock):

Is there a chance that Lawrence sees which team is leading the chase for next year’s No. 1 pick, and would prefer another season in the college ranks to playing for the Jets?

Yes, any team that ends up with the No. 1 pick isn’t going to be in great shape, but the Jets appear to be a uniquely inept franchise right now, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see such a rare prospect like Lawrence pull his version of a John Elway or Eli Manning move and do everything he can to avoid playing for them.

We’ll see how it all shakes out after the season, but Jets fans and Tigers fans will certainly have opposite reactions to what Lawrence is saying now.
