Here are some Corpus Christi athletes to watch at the 2024 UIL State Track Meet

This week marks the culmination of the Texas high school track season as athletes from El Paso to Beaumont and the Panhandle to the Rio Grande Valley descend on Austin for the three days of competition at the 2024 UIL State Track Meet.

Five dozen athletes from the Coastal Bend will take their shot at bringing home a state medal, while the Refugio boys and girls and McMullen County girls have hopes in the team title races in their classifications.

Here is a list at some athletes to look for in Austin this week:

Looking to make a splash

• Shawn Burdick, Tuloso-Midway, shot put — The Warriors junior will look to put himself in the mix after a strong Region IV meet.

• Cameran Dickson, Flour Bluff, long jump — A tight field can swing wildly with one big mark.

• Brody Garcia, Veterans Memorial, high jump — Can the sophomore set a new personal best two meets in a row?

• Nyomi Garcia, Robstown, 800 and 1,600 — Garcia got in with two wild cards and looks to end her Pickers career with her best day.

• Brody Karl, Rockport-Fulton, pole vault — Karl is in a tightly bunched, talented field in Class 4A pole vault.

• Kiana Lanton, Veterans Memorial, triple jump — Lanton heads to state with a head of steam after breaking the school record at regionals.

• Michelle Lindholm, George West, 100 hurdles — After finally breaking through to the state meet, Lindholm will take a stab at running down a medal.

• Enrique Rodriguez, Taft, 400 — Just off the medal stand as a junior, Rodriguez has another chance at state success.

• Caden Soliz, Three Rivers, long jump, triple jump — One of the area's best all-around athletes for the last several years, Soliz is capable of unleashing a big leap and finding himself in medal contention.

• Brandon Timms, McMullen County, 1,600 and 3,200 — Timms is looking for a breakthrough in his third trip to Austin.

Medal hopefuls

• Trinity Anscombe, Robstown, long jump — Anscombe is coming off a personal best jump in the Region IV meet.

• Isabella Billingsley, McMullen County, 1,600 and 3,200 — The sophomore expects to come home with some hardware this year, including as a member of the 1,600 relay.

• Ryder Harrison, Gregory-Portland, pole vault — Just a sophomore, Harrison will be right in the mix.

• Jazmyn Howard, Refugio, 100, long jump, triple jump — A five-event qualifier, Howard expects to stand on the podium at some point on Friday.

• Jayden McCoy, Tuloso-Midway, long jump — A medalist as a sophomore, McCoy has a chance again to save his best for last.

• Daniel Mendietta, Santa Gertrudis Academy, high jump — The all-state football player has a chance to end his career with a bang.

• Layton Niemann, Woodsboro, pole vault — Niemann can add to the storied tradition in pole vault at Woodsboro.

• Eden Perez, Hebbronville, 100, 200 — Perez has had a stellar year and looks to cap it in style before heading to Texas Lutheran.

• Kolton Taylor, Refugio, discus — The Region IV champion can put some pressure to get on the medal stand.

• Ciara Tilley, Refugio, discus, shot put — Tilley has already medaled as a freshman and can secure key points for the Bobcats in the team race.

Mining for gold

• Ernest Campbell, Refugio, 100, long jump — The Refugio senior bound for Texas A&M is looking to hold on to his crown in the 100, which he has claimed the last three years while adding long jump to his repertoire.

• Nathan Edlin, Ingleside, shot put — Edlin has the second-best qualifying mark in shot put.

• Riley Haug, Refugio, 400 — No stranger to state success, Haug has won in the finals in every 400 she's raced this season and also has high expectations in the 400 and 800 relay.

• Jason Moore, Refugio, 400 — Moore is a strong contender for gold in the open 400 and in the 400 and 1,600 relay.

• Jasiah Rivera, Kingsville, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles, long jump — Rivera may be one of the best hopes to come back with multiple gold medals.

• Madison Snody, Gregory-Portland, pole vault — Snody has one of the best clearances in the country this season.
