Sierra Leone as a yearling
Sierra Leone as a yearling

Once again, all roads lead to Palm Beach. Racetracks, too.

Last week's Kentucky Derby, arguably won by Mystik Dan, saw Sierra Leone take second place by a nostril. That lightning bolt was bred by Deb Oxley, who lives on the North End with her husband Jack.

Wearing hip number 202 at Fasig-Tipton's Saratoga 2022 yearling sales, the dark bay colt by Gun Runner out of Heavenly Love created a sensation when it went for a staggering $2.3 million.

Really, even the sheiks gasped a little.

“Rarely do you find me speechless,” Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning said at the time. “We are blown away ... The energy, the excitement, it just feels so good from an industry perspective.”

The buyer? A partnership that included Palm Beach resident Peter Brant.

The horse's Oxley roots run deep. Its grandmother was Darling My Darling, whom Jack bought for $300K during the 1998 Keeneland yearling sale.

Trading places: We're hearing that New England Patriots owner ― and PB rez ―Bob Kraft has sold the Plaza Hotel condo he's had for 17 years.

Sales price for the posh pad was $22.5 million, a nice return on the $14.74 million he laid out in 2007, when the hotel was undergoing its conversion to condominiums.

That will make a nice dent in the $34 million he paid for two apartments at 220 Central Park South.

And let's not forget Kraft’s $23.7 million penthouse in Palm Beach, his $43 million pile on Meadow Lane in the Hamptons, and his home in suburban Boston that sits on a such huge piece of property that when we turned into his driveway we thought we had accidentally ended up in a state park.

Heard: That Montel Williams had the ladies of the Flagler chapter DAR dabbing at their eyes with their perfectly pressed and perfumed hankies as he helped the chapter raise money for Operation 300, a camp for the children of Gold Star families ... That Marlin Wakeman, the son of former PB-er Rufus Wakeman and grandson of the late Trink Gardiner, is miraculously recuperating at his Stuart home after a shark attack. Make that sharks attack. The 24-year-old fell off a Bahamian fishing pier, a favorite haunt of hungry sharks because of all the fish parts thrown off the pier. He was quickly set upon by at least two sharks. A quick-thinking boat captain tied a tourniquet on Wakeman's leg before he was taken to a clinic. He was later flown to Florida for surgery at St. Mary's. Trauma surgeon Dr. Robert Borrego estimated one of the sharks to be about 7 feet long, based on the size of the bite mark. Um, ouch...
