College Roundup: Adrian College men's wrestling tops Siena Heights

The Adrian College men's wrestling team hosted Siena Heights on Saturday with the Bulldogs picking up a 42-7 victory.

The dual began with Adrian's Zach Phifer getting a major decision at 125 pounds before the Saints tied the dual 4-4 with a major decision from Randy Frailey at 133. Mack Baird got a void at 141 before Tanner Smith got a tech fall at 149 to make it a 15-4 lead for the Bulldogs.

SHU's Alejandro Castro won a 7-4 decision at 157 to make it a 15-7 dual score before Adrian ran away with the win. Junior Martin (174), Blake Williams (184) and Dylan Wellbaum (197) all picked up pins for the Bulldogs while Trenton DiGenova (165) got a tech fall and Mason Slocum won by a major decision.

Here's how the rest of the week went for AC and SHU:

ADRIAN

Men's Hockey

The Bulldogs were upset Friday to begin the weekend series with Augsburg as the Auggies came into Arrington and won 3-2 in overtime.

No. 3 Adrian found itself in a 2-0 hole in the first period, but cut the deficit before intermission with Mathew Rehding scoring off assists from Jaden Shields and Alec Lovisek.

The Bulldogs tied it up early in the second with a goal from Theo Thrun off assists from Connor May and John Kaljian.

After a scoreless third, the Auggies walked off the ice with an even strength goal early in OT.

Adrian bounced back Saturday to top Augsburg 3-0 to improve to 9-3-1 on the season.

Ian Amsbaugh scored 1:47 into the second off assists from Austin Clyne and Matt Couto and Bradley Somers made it a 2-0 game seconds into the third off assists from Jacob Suede and Rehding. Suede scored a goal moments later off assists from Clyne and May.

Dershahn Stewart made 18 saves in the shutout.

Women's Basketball

The Bulldogs held on late for a third-straight win Saturday as they beat Hiram 59-52.

Adrian (6-2) led 19-14 after the first and led 26-24 going into the half before taking a 41-35 lead into the final quarter.

Hiram got within a point at 53-52 with 3:50 to go, but the Bulldogs defense stepped up and didn't allow another point while going 4 for 4 from the free-throw line the rest of the way.

Bailey Taylor had 16 points, six rebounds and a steal while Kiaya Warner had 11 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Ashlyn Weatherly had 10 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and a steal while Aubrie Ickes added 10 points, four rebounds, three blocks, one steal and one assist.

Track and Field

Indiana Tech Warrior Open

The Bulldogs opened the indoor season at Indiana Tech where they picked up three event wins.

Adrian took first and second in the men's 800-meter with Alec Grzegorek (1:59.0) and Ethan Handley (2:01.27) leading the way before Michael Wright took first in the 200 (22.39).

The women picked up a win in the high jump with Cailey Beaudoin hitting 1.65 meters.

Men's Basketball

The Bulldogs dropped a non-conference game with Case Western Reserve at home 83-65 to fall to 0-8 to start the season.

Braylon Dickerson went for 15 points, three rebounds and a block while Josh Jordan had 12 points, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal and Nick Seifert had 11 points, four assists, three rebounds and a block. Kendall Chrismon added 11 points, six rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal.

SIENA HEIGHTS

Women's Basketball

Olivia DeLong had a career day as she led the Saints to a 76-49 WHAC win against Madonna on Saturday.

DeLong had 23 points, five rebounds, three blocks and two steals while Jillian Gelso had 12 points, six rebounds and a steal and Jakarri Alvin had 10 points, five rebounds and two steals.

SHU (8-2, 5-1 WHAC) led 21-11 after the first and 35-27 at the half before pulling away in the third by outscoring the Crusaders 22-6 to make it a 57-33 game.

Men's Basketball

The Saints fell 75-73 to Grace Christian on Wednesday at home, despite a furious second-half comeback.

SHU trailed 44-33 at the half, but battled back to tie it at 59-59 with 8:14 to go and 70-70 with 44 seconds left. Jonny Bowers hit a late 3-pointer to make it a 74-73 game, but Grace Christian hit a free throw to wrap up the game.

Delano Williams had 17 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals while Brent Wiles had 15 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a steal and Bowers had 15 points, five rebounds and two assists. Shawn Brown had 10 points, three blocks, three rebounds, two assists and a steal.

The Saints dropped to 4-4 and 2-3 in the WHAC with a 81-57 loss to Madonna on Saturday.

SHU struggled offensively in the first half, trailing 31-17 at the break.

Wiles had 12 points, four rebounds and a steal while Colin Nutter had 12 points and four rebounds. Williams added 11 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
