College Update: Catching up with Section 4 athletes competing at the next level

Checking in on athletes from Section 4 getting it done at the next level:

Michael Mancini, Maine-Endwell/JMU

In an 8-4 win Sunday to close a sweep of Georgia Southern, the sophomore was 2-for-2 with a home run, four runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. James Madison (24-15) is 10-8 in Sun Belt Conference play and has four home-field sweeps this season.

For the season (39 games, all starts), second baseman Mancini is batting .291 with team highs of 41 runs and 27 walks. He has six home runs and 24 RBI. He is 6-for-his-last 15 after previously stringing a 13-game hit streak.

As of statistics released April 18, his 15 stolen bases ranked sixth in the Sun Belt Conference.

Caden Olmstead, Chenango Forks/Siena

Siena produced the final 10 goals in Saturday’s 14-7 win at Mount St. Mary’s, and next the fifth-seeded Saints will visit fourth-seeded Marist on April 27 to open Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference lacrosse playoffs.

That comeback came the first game after Olmstead scored the winning goal with 2.6 seconds to play as Siena slipped past Manhattan, 11-10, after trailing 10-7 with 48 seconds remaining. He was subsequently identified as MAAC Rookie of the Week.

He has 10 hat tricks in 14 starts, and tops Siena scorers with 47 points (37 goals/10 assists).

Trent Rapp, Greene/RIT

In Game 2 of a baseball double-header Saturday against St. Lawrence, the sophomore infielder was 5-for-5 with a double, three runs and three RBI. That outing extended his hitting streak to a sixth game, and in that stretch he has gone 13-for-23.

Rapp leads the Tigers in bating average (.396), OPS (1.131), runs (27), doubles (8), home runs (6) and RBI (28). Next on RIT’s schedule is a 5 p.m. Tuesday start at Hobart.

Kevin Matson, Chenango Forks/Alfred U.

Matson had a season-best seven goals and matched his season high with nine points in the Saxons’ 26-5 lacrosse win Saturday over Keuka. That outing left him with 12 goals in his most recent two games and multiple goals in eight games his senior season.

In 13 games, he has 36 goals and 15 assists.

Donnie Vinson, Whitney Point/University at Buffalo

The erstwhile Binghamton University All-American was introduced Sunday as University at Buffalo head wrestling coach.

Twice a state runner-up while representing Whitney Point High, the Marathon native had been associate head coach at Cornell since 2021. He’d previously served four seasons as North Carolina State assistant – ACC champions all four years.

Vinson closed his competitive days at BU with a 132-27 record, the victory total a program record.

Allie L’Amoreaux, Maine-Endwell/BU

In 17 appearances/14 starts, L’Amoreaux has pitched to a 10-3 record and 3.25 ERA for the Bearcats – the latter stat bruised Sunday at Albany, when she surrendered five hits and four earned runs in an inning.

She has struck out 88 batters in 84 innings while limiting opponents to a .238 average. On April 16, she was recognized for the third time this season as America East Pitcher of the Week – that final week on the strength of a 2-0 record, 0.54 ERA and 18 strikeouts.

At the plate, she bats .266 with five home runs and team highs of eight doubles and 25 RBI for BU (28-12, 10-4 AE).

Wendi Hammond, Waverly/UAlbany

The graduate student from Chemung, last season’s America East softball leader in innings pitched (155), complete games, (15), wins (13) and shutouts, on Sunday pitched a five-inning two-hitter (three strikeouts, no walks) in a 9-0 roll past Binghamton.

Hammond this season is tops among AE pitchers in ERA (2.22), wins (16), complete games (15) and innings pitched (126). Opponents have mustered eight hits against 13 strikeouts in her most recent three outings.

Caleb Walker, Deposit/Alfred State

The junior shortstop leads his baseball team with four home runs, 12 extra-base hits and 50 total bases. He his batting .259 with seven doubles, a triple and 13 RBI and 10 walks. He has six multiple-hit games.
