College basketball: Blackhawks breeze by Elgin in fifth-place game

Six Blackhawks scored in double figures and No. 11 (NJCAA DI) Southeastern Community College breezed past Elgin, 91-57, in the fifth place game of the Highland men's basketball tournament in Freeport, Illinois, Saturday night.

Eleven of the 12 Blackhawks who played scored.

SCC's Javordo Mitchell led the way with 12 points. Jimmy Beane, Manny Austin, Stephon McGill, Bruce Carpenter and Gavin Kies each scored 10 points. Davion Bailey sank three of five 3-point attempts for nine points.

Jesiah West, who averages a double double, played just 12 minutes and finished with six points and four rebounds. He averages 14.5 points and 10.2 rebounds.

SCC dominated the boards with 37 rebounds to Elgin's 24. SCC's Railer Vargas-Hernandez grabbed eight rebounds to accompany his six points. SCC made 56.1 percent of its field goal attempts on 37-for-66. Elgin sank 19 of 46 for 41.3 percent.

Elgin's Jordan Wilkins led all scorers with 16 points. Dorian Little added 10.

SCC (16-2) is now idle until Jan. 5 when it hosts Illinois Central at 7 p.m. in Loren Walker Arena.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

SCC 65, NORTHEAST 55: Antuanae Garrett turned a double double and Southeastern Community College downed Northeast in Keokuk's Cardinal Stritch gymnasium.

Garrett had 14 points and 10 rebounds. SCC's Sanee Cates scored 15 points and Olivia Ashton added 11. Tut Braxton and Raevyn Russell each scored eight points. The Blackhawks made 25 of 57 shots from the field for 43.9 percent.

Northeast's Ashley Hassett led all scorers with 25 points. Marta Pons added 12.

SCC (6-6) plays at Des Moines Area Community College (9-4) on Wednesday.
