ORLANDO, Fla. — The Browns are expanding their horizons to a country that holds a special meaning to one of their stars.

The NFL announced on Monday at the owners meetings in Orlando Fla., that the Browns were granted international marketing rights in Nigeria. They are the first NFL team to be awarded the market as part of the league's Global Markets Program.

The move still must be approved by the league's International Committee, which will meet during the league meetings which run until Wednesday. There's no expectation that the move won't receive that approval.

The designation of Nigeria hits close to home within the Browns locker room. Pro Bowl tight end David Njoku is of Nigerian decent, as his parents immigrated to the United States.

"We are excited to be awarded the Nigerian market to further expand the Dawg Pound to Nigeria," Browns partner JW Johnson said in a release. "The game of American football continues to grow across the globe and Nigeria is an important market to be in with the increasing number of players across our league that take great pride in their Nigerian heritage. The Browns look forward to continuing to grow the game in Nigeria through the Global Marketing Program while learning from and connecting with the Nigerian community to cultivate more opportunities.”

The NFL launched the Global Markets Program in Jan., 2022. The program, which was previously known as the International Home Marketing Areas, allows teams access to international marketing, fan engagement and commercialization activations in order to build their brands globally.
